Historia
Titan is the first full-length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller’s exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book indelibly alters our image of this most enigmatic capitalist. Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake-oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world’s richest man by creating America’s most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America.

This book was not one of Chernow's best. But, I suspect this is the most honest and thorough portrait of Rockefeller ever written.

Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Every American Needs to Know this Story
Revisado: 06-25-20
I had no idea James Garfield was such a noble and worthy man. I'm getting his face tattooed on my chest. His story, tragic and inspirational, is a desperately needed reminder of what America can and should be.

Historia
Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

Poignant, Prescient, Brilliant
Revisado: 06-20-20
Wow... Once again, and finally, Octavia Butler proves she is a master storyteller. The Parable of the Talents is every bit as powerful and resonant today as it was when she wrote it. She tackles themes of race, gender, sexual identity, and America's continuing struggle to come to terms with its Original Sin. Additionally, she explores themes both more intimate (such as the fundamental human need to be accepted and the forging of one's own identity) and more grand (like societal cycles of regression and progress and mankind's destiny in the stars).
Furthermore, the reader's performance was inspired. This is truly one of the most impactful audiobooks I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

Ten years have passed on Tines World, where Ravna Bergnsdot and a number of human children ended up after a disaster that nearly obliterated humankind throughout the galaxy. And no matter the cost, these malcontents are determined to overturn the fledgling civilization....

A disappointing entry in an otherwise solid series
Revisado: 10-16-19
My title says it all. Vinge flopped in his attempt to tell the story of the evolving Tines world. His characters are flat and his story is rambling and fails to ever hit its stride. Repeated reference to the Blight goes nowhere. I care about no one and nothing in this story.

Historia
A Fire Upon the Deep is the big, breakout book that fulfills the promise of Vinge's career to date: a gripping tale of galactic war told on a cosmic scale. Thousands of years hence, many races inhabit a universe where a mind's potential is determined by its location in space, from superintelligent entities in the Transcend, to the limited minds of the Unthinking Depths, where only simple creatures and technology can function.

A (usually) excellent space opera
Revisado: 09-15-19
The universe Binge creates is truly unique. The consequences of partitioned laws of physics are interesting, though not always as fleshed out as I would have liked. The characters are generally interesting, though at times can resemble the campiness of previous generations (e.g. Asimov, Heinlein). The most interesting part of the book is the Tines world--they are a truly unique race with a world whose details are consistently compelling. As a side note, the way he describes a sort of galactic internet is interesting, but seems a bit dated (as well it should given the book was written over a quarter century ago).

After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is the first time William dies.

Miserable dreck

This book was so poorly written it offended me. The author's imagery is clunky at best. He falls easily into (the worst possible variation of) cliche. And he consistently misinterprets fundamental science. Save yourself the trouble...

Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

Beautiful Portrait of an American Original
Revisado: 06-12-19
Douglass' life spans a tumultuous and transformative period in American and world history. His personal story parallels the drama of the world around him. The book is written with a profound and lyrical quality appropriate for such a grand and prophetic figure. The reader perfectly intones the poetry of this book, capturing the emotion and gravity of it's subject.

Historia
This is the way the world ends, for the last time. The season of endings grows darker, as civilization fades into the long cold night. Essun - once Damaya, once Syenite, now avenger - has found shelter, but not her daughter. Instead there is Alabaster Tenring, destroyer of the world, with a request. But if Essun does what he asks, it would seal the fate of the Stillness forever. Far away, her daughter Nassun is growing in power - and her choices will break the world.

Good writing and an interesting premise, but...
Revisado: 04-22-19
Good writing and an interesting premise, but... much like the first installment, the world building faulters after a strong start. I want to love this book--mostly because of the well-drawn characters and emotionally resonant writing--but the world is too poorly fleshed out. Exactly what the different races are and exactly what their relationships are to one another are frustratingly vague. I don't think I'll read the next book despite the author's obvious literary skill.

Thirteen hundred gates have opened to solar systems around the galaxy. But as humanity builds its interstellar empire in the alien ruins, the mysteries and threats grow deeper. In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.

The Expanse Series Returns to Peak Form
Revisado: 04-05-19
The last few installments in this series have left me disappointed. The authors' swashbuckling plot arcs felt stale and we're beginning to detract from the series' awesome world building.
Tiamat's Wrath reinvigorates the series by introducing the long awaited Laconians into the mix. It also begins to flesh out the long-teased transdimensional beings that threaten all of humanity. The Expanse universe just got a lot bigger... and better! Can't wait for the next one!

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

A strong and original sci-fi/fantasy
Revisado: 03-07-19
The writing is exceptional. The characters are well-developed and original. The story itself unfolds in a fairly interesting, if at times predictable, way. The world building can be uneven, particularly geography and the difference between the races (Oragens excluded). I'm still not sure who's human and who's not, and what their relationships to various power structures are.
All that said, it's one of the better and certainly more original books in the genre in recent memory.
