Ode to an Alcoholic
Revisado: 01-29-25
Meh. Unlike other reviewers, I didn’t care for the narrator. Seemed rushed and petulant. I also didn’t care for the constant preoccupation with alcohol. I get that it’s a pretty accurate depiction of how the mind of an alcoholic works, but having known, cared for or lost a few people who struggled with alcoholism, I had a hard time getting past what felt like a glorification of the disease. Usually there is at least a singular quality that endears you to a character. For Nicki, I held onto the fact that she kept slowly showing signs of accepting her own choice to stay and be present enough for the kids to finish it - but - there isn’t anything bada$$ about being a bully. And she had some tendencies. There were parts of the dialogue where I wanted to shake her for that kind of behavior. Toward people she barely knew, toward the kids, the guy that saved her more than once and the crazy lady. It bothers me. Just not a great person. I know it is just a book. But I love these kinds of books and have read the author before and really enjoyed her work. So I guess maybe, just disappointed? Hopefully the MC will have some growth in book two but I don’t think I’ll be making it there. Overall? It was just okay for me.

The strange cadence sort of got me
Revisado: 11-25-24
This book was a quite enjoyable and quick read for me. The narrator spoke in a way that after I increased speed a bit, sort of fit the lead characters quirky and mysterious nature. I was intrigued by the depth and life in each new characters and the switch of voice. Yeah, I felt invested in getting to the ending shortly after starting. I think about half way through I knew what would be the outcome but it wasn’t that it’s a predictable conclusion, just my writer mind kicked in and went where I’d ultimately want to go. It was good. I recommend and will likely listen to others in the series.

Why isn’t there more? I was happily listening along and it just ended. There should’ve been more. He can finish it anytime. Because I’d like to know what happens next. I do not think I am alone in that. Still, I’m a bit skeptical of 13-year-old genius survival guide who doesn’t know the word “catty-corner”. Just saying. I enjoyed the books, listened straight through but Rebecca was always problematic for me. So author, if your reading this write the rest of this story.

It’s good but…also freaking annoying
Revisado: 06-22-24
Okay. Talk about slow burn. This series is that. A super slow burning burn of stupid silly burning. I mean that thing that authors do where they tell you at the start that two people want to be together and then spend the entirety of the material yo-yo-ing them (and you as the reader or listener) about! Freaking frustrating as hell. It’s good, don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed certain parts immensely. Pompous Harry. Alpha Batten. Points. Bonds. The Blue sense. All the f*ckery and shenanigans- not to mention some truly gobsmacking, unbelievably inventive swear tangents. Godzilla. I needed to take breaks and wash my ear holes with a mellowed type of book every so often. Half the time I wanted to root for Marnie but the other, I wanted to smack her into the next book already. Shes quite selfish even as she is aware her decisions are ill-advised, which after awhile made her character pretty predictable. She is a bit rude and somewhat obtuse for a “smart” person, an expert. In my head she is a mashup of Penelope Garcia and Lorelei Gilmore. Still there is a quality of realness to her. Grit. She is brutally honest about who she is and what she does and why she does it. Coupled with quirky weirdness and an irreverent sense of humor, I could not let it go unfinished. Could not stop listening for long. The supporting characters helped so much with this- I loved the easy flow and character building seen from book to book. Great interpretation and performance from the narrator also help. I will keep on listening.

Historia
Cassie Forrest isn't surprised to learn that the day she’s decided to get her life together is also the day the world ends. After all, she’s been on a self-imposed losing streak since her survivalist parents died: she’s stopped painting, broken off her engagement to Adrian and dated a real jerk. Rectifying her mistakes has to wait, however, because Cassie and her friends have just enough time to escape Brooklyn for her parents’ cabin before Bornavirus LX turns them into zombies, too.

Good!
Revisado: 05-17-24
I enjoyed this story. It was heartfelt and engaging. Some may argue this point but I felt like it was committed to being a romantic drama storytelling overall and didn’t get bogged down in the way that a lot of the”zombie” stories sometimes do with endless paragraphs trying to explain the virus down to an origin point or give each minute detail of a battle scene. It was well paced from start to finish - focused more on the development of the characters relationships with one another in the midst of this virus/zombie outbreak and not necessarily on the event itself. They aren’t trying to save the world or cure it, just exist in the aftermath. Perhaps the author explores or expounds on that part of it in the next book. I just liked that the characters were human without being overly obtuse or unlikable(at least for very long). They were allowed to evolve and change as the story progressed. It had humor, romance, introspection and a bit of conflict here and there to keep you interested in finding out what happens next. I would be happy to move onto the next installment.

Historia
Nothing matters to the walking dead but finding live flesh to chew on, and nothing matters to Ginny Mills except getting back to her family. Nothing matters to Lee Quartine but keeping his small band of survivors - including Ginny - alive. Upstate New York is overrun, other survivors are more of a danger than a help, and the rumors have begun. There's a place where organization and government still exists, a place where a cure for the zombie virus is underway. The problem is, that place is Atlanta, and there's a hell of a lot of road to cover to get there.

Jenny - another name for a female donkey
Revisado: 05-15-24
See also a$$. As in stubborn as this female MC, who I found grating, obtuse and full of silly judgments and self-absorbed internal ramblings. Her opinions of the world around her are tedious and cliche with very limited growth over four whole books. I always find it laughable when lib- leaning characters hold to such stereotypical mindsets of certain “ people, places, and things”. It got old quick and I found myself rolling my eyes instead of caring about the characters individual stories. Lee was likable enough though I’ve never heard of an army guy less confident(especially the way this narrator portrays him - the “uh’s” and “um’s abound). I appreciated his friendship with JuJu…some of the other minor characters. The story had small but real moments of humor, insight and touching narrative but unfortunately these are lost in stupid plot choices (like going to NY at all), clunky introductions to “new” characters you don’t hear from in almost entire books and copious amounts of back and forth between internal and actual dialogue that grossly slowed down the delivery. I struggled to finish these and likely will not read this author again.

Every modern city has one week’s worth of food to feed itself. Then it will collapse. Cut off the resources to New York, Sydney, or even a mid-size metropolis, and millions will soon starve. In Zero Day Code we see those immense and open, hyper-complex, networked supercities of the new millennium die. And in the last moments we see their vengeance take form as all the best and worst traits of humanity bubble to the surface.

Slow start for me!
Revisado: 02-03-24
I typically really get into this genre but this one was tough going to start! I didn’t really enjoy it until the very end. Though there were little moments of humor and insight into what the end might look like from this particular viewpoint there’s a lot of stereotypical generalizations that I could do without but that seems to go either way to the left or way to the right with this genre. Still, I want to say emphatically that in spite of this, I quite enjoyed the narrator and his vast assortment of accents as he was very talented and delivered the characters with some serious commitment and dimension. Impressively so! And there are a lot to keep track of. I struggled to keep up with who was with who, continually rewinding to distinguish between for instance, James and Michelle and Rick and Melissa or “Mel” and that girl Ellie or Elle that was working alongside the Aussie chef-non-chef who swore so creatively. Mel, Michelle, Elle.. so similar. Gah. When they met up it was real cluster. But at least it was getting somewhere! For the first 2/3 of the book it felt like I needed to take notes but also like nothing really happened. Maybe part of that is due to listening over reading, who knows! I stuck with it for the narrator and will listen on somewhat surprisedly because toward the end I did start to like a few of these characters. I’m not sure how that happened because a couple are right awful human beings.

I always like this author. The narrator did great with tone and nuance. Kept me interested. The story…It’s a bit predictable but it’s par for the course in this genre, I think. The flow of events, the humor and the drama balance… all tied up in a nice HEA? Yeah, I’m down.
