Truly terrible, with incorrect author links to the 48 Laws of Power’s Robert Greene. Highly disappointing!

Stunningly good overview of Tolkien’s influences and objectives

The lectures are not focused on unraveling details of plot and character, but rather the focus is on the influences and objectives Tolkien tackled in his published writings and especially wrestled with and evolved in his incomparable legendarium. As someone who has loved the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, Beren and Luthien, Children of Hurin and dabbled through some of the History of Middle Earth, I found this wonderfully erudite. Dimitra’s website has full support for this lecture series, with additional references and readings. Very highly recommended for those interested in understanding the breadth and depth of Tolkien’s work.

Fun and Lighthearted Adventure ala Wizard of Oz

I really wasn’t drawn to this title by the trailer or by the first half of the pilot episode, which seemed stuck in a smug oh-so-smart tween self-awareness land. I didn’t understand the bear’s “twinkle” which was highlighted in the trailer and which made the character seem super annoying.

HOWEVER, by the end of the first 10-15 minute episode, some genuine fun and silliness began with the kids starting on a real adventure through a land of random crazy characters like the Wizard of Oz.

Each episode is in the 15 minute range, and guest voices and characters are introduced in each episode. I’m now hooked and look forward to each day’s episode. Give the first two episodes a listen and you’ll know the tone for the remaining 18!

Thank you Audible for this great family holiday treat!

Stephen Fry is amazing and this recording is wonderfully produced, but the last short story collection, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, is missing even though Fry recorded it and it is included in the Audible version in the UK! As maddening as not being able to purchase Fry’s recording of the Harry Potter series in the US (although Jim Dale is excellent). The fact that this material exists but has been removed for the US market is unconscionable…pay the money and get the rights Audible/Amazon! Bezos can fly to outer space but we can’t listen to stories written 100 years ago?

Yes, This IS a Faithful Recording!

1) A reviewer has claimed that this recording is not the complete story. They are wrong. The appendices of the book are not read on audio, but the entire prose narrative including chapter heading quotes are all read.

2) There is a change in voice actors for some of the characters in the midst of the recording which is annoying but which I did not find hard to follow. More annoying was the unhelpful use of the names of citations from the chapter heading quotes as chapter labels (much better would have been the use of simple numbering), and the inclusion of the chapter's quote before the section break, which resulted in me going back 30 seconds or so if I wanted to review a certain chapter.

3) The production is very professionally read, despite the the issues I mentioned in 2 above. If you want to listen to the full Dune story, this is a great choice.

Fantastic Original, Flawed Booktrack Edition

This is a review for the Booktrack edition only!

1) There are two editions of this audible title. Both have Moira Quirk as the narrator with the same recorded performance...the Booktrack edition adds an accompanying light musical score.

2) I have both editions. If you are looking for a fun and often-silly YA steampunk/vampires/werewolves story in the Parasol Protectorate universe, this is a sure pick. And Moira Quirk does all the voices wonderfully!

3) BUT, the Booktrack version has two flaws that recommend against this purchase. First, you will notice that the Booktrack file is 3 minutes shorter than the original. This is due to a horrible mistake of dropping 3 minutes of narration from the end of Chapter 2...a key scene showing how Sophronia rescues Monique!

4) Additionally, the Booktrack musical score seems to just be missing after Chapter 4....the rest of the file sounds identical to the original with no discernible score.

For these reasons I do not recommend this Booktrack version from Audible; purchase the original version instead.
