Historia
Three months ago, Tansy Bloom quit monster hunting. Since then, she’s been trying to live a normal life (whatever that means), but ending up single, unemployed, and living on a boat outside her godfather’s pub definitely wasn’t part of the plan. So, when Tansy’s ex-husband – fellow monster hunter Rex Barclay – turns up like a bad penny and asks for her help with his latest investigation, Tansy reluctantly agrees. At first, the job appears to be a straightforward monster hunt – following a spate of large creature sightings, Rex believes a werewolf is on the loose in Norfolk.

Historia
The one thing you never talk about while you’re in the Scholomance is what you’ll do when you get out. Not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way. But it’s all we dream about: the hideously slim chance we’ll survive to make it out the gates and improbably find ourselves with a life ahead of us, a life outside the Scholomance halls. And now the impossible dream has come true. I’m out, we’re all out. We saved everyone. So much for my great-grandmother’s prophecy of doom and destruction. Ha, only joking! Actually, it’s gone all wrong.

Fantastic and satisfying closure and growth
Revisado: 10-31-22
As someone who loved but then couldn't finish Novik's Temeraire series, I have to marvel at how much she's improved as a storyteller with this series. The world, the characters, the plot and conflicts between them, all very engaging, interesting, and clever. The way the main characters' personalities and attitudes and style play off of one-another, the competence and relatable actions of antagonists, the humor, horror, and hope threads winding through everything that happens, it's just so rare to see anyone able to weave together so many challenging elements into a satisfying and impressive whole. Highly recommend.

Historia
In Wisdom, Shelter. That’s the official motto of the Scholomance. I suppose you could even argue that it’s true—only the wisdom is hard to come by, so the shelter’s scant. Our beloved school does its best to devour all its students—but now that I’ve reached my senior year and have actually won myself a handful of allies, it’s suddenly developed a particular craving for me. Even if I somehow make it through the endless waves of maleficaria that it keeps throwing at me, I haven’t any idea how my allies and I are going to make it through the graduation hall alive.

Fantastic humor in a tale of gritty survival
Revisado: 10-11-22
Delighted in this entry even more than the previous novel. The personalities of other students, the character of the school itself, the novel ways of presenting the eerie absence of danger and the very real costs of being a weirdo who is just useful enough to worry about what happens when the world changes around you and those who tolerate you, and a wonderful punk 'We're forging a better way than the status quo' tale

Adam Binder has the Sight. It’s a power that runs in his bloodline: the ability to see beyond this world and into another, a realm of magic populated by elves, gnomes, and spirits of every kind. Years after his brother Bobby had him committed to a psych ward, Adam is ready to come to grips with who he is, to live his life on his terms, to find love, and maybe even use his magic to do some good. Hoping to track down his missing father, Adam follows a trail of cursed artifacts to Denver, only to discover that an ancient and horrifying spirit has taken possession of Bobby’s wife.

Unique yet familiar urban fantasy
Revisado: 08-13-22
This book has a lot going for it, in terms of familial relationships and an interesting magical underworld, but never does too much with the fun world that they built. lots of great potential from the author and series.

disappointing follow-up in a fun series
Revisado: 05-20-22
I wanted tl like this one a ton. One of the most interesting and fun supporting characters from 'not your sidekick' takes center stage, but the book can't tell how much it wants to be recap of the first (about a third of it?) and how much to advance the narrative (not much). very much a story told at you, with lots of frustrating teen moments and foolish protagonist bits to advance the plot, not much of the cleverness and fun we got from the first entry. hoping it finds its feet again.

Historia
Kate and her younger brother, Tom, lead dull, uninteresting lives. And if their dull, uninteresting parents are anything to go by, they don't have much to look forward to. Why can't Kate have thrilling adventures and save the world the way people do in books? Even her 11th birthday is shaping up to be mundane - that is, until her mysterious and highly irresponsible Uncle Herbert, whom she's never even met before, surprises her with the most unexpected, exhilarating, inappropriate birthday present of all time: a colossal steam locomotive called the Silver Arrow.

Whimsy and growth with an edge
Revisado: 02-16-22
Fanciful story of magic and adventure not always turning out like the stories kids grow up with. If you're expecting something like Grossman's 'The Magicians', you'd do well to adjust your expectations towards a much younger audience. some of his skill at writing ominous dread and fear is there, though, which may catch you by surprise in a children's book. There's morals about growth and adversity and regret, finding optimism and hope even at the darkest moments or when having to face your species' worse aspects, and it sticks the landing rather well (if a bit less gently than many books for younger audiences.) Loades with clever and unique characters and a surprising amount of real information, highly recommended for any animal-lovers in your life.

Welcome to Andover, where superpowers are common, but internships are complicated. Just ask high school nobody, Jessica Tran. Despite her heroic lineage, Jess is resigned to a life without superpowers and is merely looking to beef-up her college applications when she stumbles upon the perfect (paid!) internship only it turns out to be for the town's most heinous supervillain.

crushes, capes, and second-gen struggles
Revisado: 02-14-22
Hats off to an author who can stretch an adorable-yet-painful painfully obvious secret crush just to the level of tolerable and stick the landing. the characters are wonderful, the worldbuilding is interesting, and the parallel challenges of being a child of superhero immigrants and dealing with two wildly-different, yet powerfully similar, sets of expectations and judgements is great. Pacing varies, but a very fun listen.
