As a neuroscientist, I found this book a refreshing and accurate narrative of the current state of microglial research. Nakazawa brings popular science into the 21st Century of immunology and the brain, exploring cutting-edge research and highlighting some of the most influential scientists in the field. Weaving together narrative and science for the everyday listener, Nakazawa creates a beautiful tapestry befitting of this once understudied cell type.

Unfortunately, the performance of this audiobook was incredibly disappointing. The pronunciation of “microglia” throughout the book is frustrating and very distracting. Of the dozens of microglia researchers I work with, not a single one pronounces it this way. Other key words that are integral to the story of this book such as “tau” are mispronounced as well and make certain chapters hard to follow. That being said, this may not be a huge deal to those outside of the neuro-immune/AD fields. I expect better from Random House Audio, now I’ll think twice before buying science audiobooks from them in the future.

Historical perspectives on the beginning of epigenetics covers much of the basics that would be covered in an undergraduate course. The focus is basic with a good narrative. Not recommended for those looking for in depth snapshot into current views of epigenetics.

Amazing story, inspiring, and an emotional listen. As a neuroscientist, I enjoyed this book as a testament to the strength of the mind. Lipska’s resilience brings humanity to the field and serves as a model for all of those struggling with mental illness. That being said, this is an incredibly difficult listen - the image of a woman so in tuned with the inner workings of the brain losing the ability to discern her own mental state is riveting. The roller coaster of emotion is highlighted through the peaks and valleys of her prognosis, if you are up for the journey... this book has something for everyone.

Vonnegut genius, notably aged

As a huge Vonnegut fan, this piece reminded me of all the things I love about his writing but something felt off. The foreword admits the original draft was considerably cut down and still this book could not escape the faults of a genius aged. Witty, inspiring, yet missing the cogency of Slaughterhouse 5 or Galapagos. Sharper than God Bless You Dr. Kevorkian, but does not crack Jr’s top 10.
