Historia
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

A very interesting quilt of a story
Revisado: 02-27-25
There are many interesting themes in this novel, and a large caste in intriguing characters. While I was able to keep track of all of them, the shifting narratives and timelines made it a bit hard for me to feel attached to or invested in any of them. I enjoyed the book, but I would have expected more emotional resonance with the subject and some of the powerful stories that make up this complex tale. That is my only explanation for not loving it wholeheartedly — there are just a few too many storylines and themes to feel completely captivated by any of them.

Revisado: 02-11-25
A fine book, if you want simplistic, overly romantic (and possibly AI written) stories. This is not the work of the Kristin Hannah I have loved for so long. I’m heartbroken.

A captivating, perfectly paced thriller
Revisado: 07-26-24
This book kept me engaged from beginning to end, not only because the story was so spellbinding, but the wry tone and the main character’s hilarious quips made it absolutely delightful. I laughed out loud many times! The narrator was the perfect pick for this novel. He did a wonderful job. I look forward to reading more books by this author and hearing more stores narrated by this reader!

Historia
Being a typewriter is not as easy as it looks. Surrounded by books (notorious attention hogs) and recently replaced by a computer, Olivetti has been forgotten by the Brindles—the family he’s lived with for years. The Brindles are busy humans, apart from twelve-year-old Ernest, who would rather be left alone with his collection of Oxford English Dictionaries. Once a collector of words, now Olivetti only collects dust. He gets a rare glimpse of action from Ernest’s mom, Beatrice—his used-to-be frequent visitor—only for her to drop him off at Heartland Pawn Shop and leave him behind.

Historia
Caught between realities, a mathematician, a book dealer, and a mobster desperately seek a notorious book that disappears upon being read. Only the author, a rakish sci-fi writer, knows whether his popular novel is truthful or a hoax. In a story that is cosmic, inventive, and sly, multi-award-winning author Lavie Tidhar (Central Station) travels from the emergence of life to the very ends of the universe.

Confusing, difficult to follow book
Revisado: 06-01-24
Wonderful reading voices rescue this extremely hard to parse story that alternates between multiple time periods, perspectives, and realities. The science fiction aspects seemed very weak to me, leaning on bizarre narratives involving a creature made of bees, and various notions around black holes and notions of God and the universe. I really wanted to like this book, yet I found myself increasing the speed to get through it and was relieved to be done, which is never how I want to experience a book.

Great second book in the trilogy
Revisado: 07-02-23
This author is a fantastic storyteller. The second book follows 12 years after the timeline of the first and she does a nice job of weaving in details from the first one in case you start with the second. This book is as good as the first in the trilogy!

Terrific story
Revisado: 12-17-22
Kent Krueger is one of the best storytellers of our time, and certainly one of the top Minnesota writers. His sense of place, and ability to put the reader right there in the middle of it all is profound. While this story is over two decades old, it still resonates. It is moving, tragic and beautiful.
