Light and political content
Revisado: 12-07-24
Very light content and unfortunately too involved with politcally taking sides without being a political book

Historia
There is no question that the United States faces dangerous threats from without; the greatest peril to the country, however, comes from within. In The Bill of Obligations, bestselling author Richard Haass argues that, to solve our climate of division and safeguard our democracy, the very idea of citizenship must be revised and expanded. The Bill of Rights is at the center of our Constitution, yet the most intractable conflicts often emerge from cases that, as former Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer pointed out, “are not about right versus wrong. They are about right versus right.”

A Lost Opportunity
Revisado: 07-17-24
I was so excited to read this book.
Writing about an important topic, the author folds into a partisan take full of grievances and common places. Some of the examples provided in support of the arguments have already aged badly (Spotify, Neil Young, ...)
To build a bridge you need to walk a world on both sides and then bring each one by hand to a common understanding. This book failed this and it is a shame. For a much more promising path read David Brooks' latest books.
Sad I wasted my money on this one. Wish I could get a refund Audible.

Historia
Brett L. Walker tackles key themes regarding Japan's relationships with its minorities, state and economic development, and the uses of science and medicine. The book begins by tracing the country's early history through archaeological remains, before proceeding to explore life in the imperial court, the rise of the samurai, civil conflict, encounters with Europe, and the advent of modernity and empire. Walker's vibrant and accessible new narrative then follows Japan's ascension from the ashes of World War II into the thriving nation of today.

Too much western ideology
Revisado: 04-01-24
The author superimposes the current western cultural wars on a history of Japan. He dedicates the a whole hour to talk about climate change and Japan's contribution to it. He looks for oppressed / oppressor narratives in every season and doesn't explore the causes of Japan's unique path, culture and historical personalities. You can do better with any other of the currently available books on Japan History. But if you want ideological talking points to criticise Japan (particularly marxist ones) this one is for you.

Historia
Nearly six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late 30s took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic by Lucretius—a beautiful poem containing the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles.

very shallow theology
Revisado: 02-25-24
although beautiful written, it is shallow in theological content. reads more like an atheist apostology than a well reasoned analysis of arguments and counter arguments.

Good idea Poor Execution Get Jon Haidt instead
Revisado: 06-05-23
A case of "do as I say, not as I do". Proposing to get people to change their minds while always sure that his views are correct. It seems the premise is that the people on the wrong side of the aisle will be able to see the light once they are given time to think and an emotional support environment to vent.
