Historia
What is it about Iceland that makes many women's experience there so positive? Eliza Reid, the First Lady of Iceland, examines her adopted homeland's attitude toward women—the deep-seated cultural sense of fairness, the influence of historical role models, and, crucially, the areas where Iceland still has room for improvement. Reid's own experience as an immigrant from small-town Canada who never expected to become a first lady is expertly interwoven with interviews with dozens of sprakkar ("extraordinary women") to form the backbone of an illuminating discussion.

Poor narration
Revisado: 07-03-23
Narrator’s voice detracted from the book and made it very difficult to listen. I almost quit listening many times.

Boring and predictable!
Revisado: 01-06-22
This book was awful. Characters were uninteresting. And why was it read by a British woman? British accent in a Martha’s Vineyard setting doesn’t make sense. The writing was choppy, ending abrupt and predictable.

Historia
Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself.

Boring!
Revisado: 03-02-16
How could the performance have been better?
The performance was stilted and slow. If the narrator wants the reader to be empathic and interested in the author's story, she needs to make the character more real.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Very disappointing. One of the most boring books ever. From the reviews, I expected something more than a melodramatic, whining narrative. The book was dull, and I couldn't wait till it was over - I would have quit listening if I hadn't paid for it. I kept waiting for the great book that I'd expected, but it never materialized. I can't believe it's a best seller - but then I got roped into buying it too, so the joke's on me!
