Historia
As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house until one night her stargazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.

Disturbing, heartbreaking and yet sweet
Revisado: 02-11-23
The subject matter of this book is not for the faint of heart. As someone who works with children who have experienced trauma it was definitely a hard listen at times, but there was a thread of genuine intimacy that moved me forward despite it all. Another reviewer mentions the disturbing age gap between characters and that is undeniably challenging, yet Greenwood so skillfully crafts the vulnerabilities of each charcter that it somehow makes this extremely unconventional love story feel genuine. Additionally, the narrator vividly portraying young characters almost makes it worse at times, but this also captivates the listener with both the delicacy and ferocity of the character.
The storyline is heartbreaking and incredibly disturbing, but the palpable love between certain characters makes the difficult stuff worth getting through.

Some compelling detail, but oddly edited
Revisado: 01-25-23
I was intrigued by the book, but ultimately didn't fall in love with it. Though the character was sympathetic and parts of the story were heartbreaking or exciting or cheekily fun the book had a strange flow. The overall composition and editing detracted a bit from the story.
The narrator did an pretty good job of trying to bring the characters and story to life, but something flat about his cadence fell a hair short also.

Millions of kids can't read well. Scientists have known for decades how children learn to read, but many schools don’t know about the research. They buy teacher training and books that are rooted in a disproven idea. In Sold a Story, Emily Hanford investigates four authors and a publishing company that have made millions selling this idea.

Great Narration
Revisado: 10-20-22
Admittedly I'm not a big fan of Victorian literature. It starts of a bit slow and the language a bit too flowery, but Thandiwe Newton does an amazing job of bringing these characters to life and breathed in a revitalizing air of vigor to a period piece I had once thought dead.

Do not listen to this around your kids- it is definitely not appropriate for young kid ears. if you need a mental break from the stresses of motherhood this book is perfect. Funny, relatable and for us time-crunched mom's quick!

It was okay.
Revisado: 10-20-22
The characters were singular and unrelatable; and the story within the story poorly done thus fracturing the illusion of a "brilliant" best-selling author. The ending was slapdash and inconsistent with the rest of the novel.
