Pretty corny insta-romance

The basic concept of the story is decent but it's just so corny. Why does everyone wink in this book? Some of the actions of the character's don't make sense. I mean after Jemma's ex steals her 'lifetime work', she somehow 'doesn't' think to check that he's not signed into her new contract? Not very believable. When the author introduced Area 51 to the storyline I was done and couldn't wait to finish the book. As for the narration it really wasn't the best, rather flat with no real attempt to differentiate between the male and female character's.

This is a short but action filled story about Beth who is trying to ride out Hurricane Katrina alone, when she comes to the aid of Donovan who has crashed and blacked out in his car. She drags him into her home to tend to his wounds and inadvertently discovers he might be a very dangerous man. There is a tug of war of emotions for Beth who is torn between her instant attraction to Donovan and the fact that he may do her serious harm. Donovan claims he is an innocent man who quickly falls for Beth. The question is, is he telling the truth, can Beth trust him or will she end up paying with her life.

I wasn't quite sold by the quick romance between Beth and Donovan, but they were in life or death circumstances which changes the perspective. That said Beth comes across as a little naive at times and I didn't find it very believable when the "L" word was thrown about. But for those who believe in love a first sight this won't be a problem. Overall I thought it was a pretty good book, well narrated by Craig Long.

Interesting take on a dog/wolf pack attack story. I felt the author spent way too much time on the Viking origin story and much could have been edited out. One minute the focus is on present day, then it departs into a long section about the origins of the species and the intermingling of the different races, that it starts to feel like the story will never go back to present day. Once that is done, it pretty much focuses on present day and you can get on with the story.

The story itself is fair, it seems a lot of new characters are repeatedly introduced only to die off quickly. There was a romance which kind of just.....happened. The author didn't do much work to build the emotions behind the romance. One minute the couple meet (clear attraction from the female not from the male), the next the female is berating the male for not stepping up & acting on her interest quicker, then all of a sudden they 'agree to be partnered'. This is the only way I can describe it because it came across as forced & mechanical. It's not a big part of the story but is a theme the author chose to persist with throughout the book. I liked the fact that the story was set in Alaska and is centered around the indigenous people. The story was just ok for me.

Unfortunately this whole story is not very believable and the decision making of the characters were very questionable and didn't make sense. For example the family's farm was seriously threatened by an armed mob who essentially wanted to takeover the farm for themselves. The family said they would rather die defending the farm, already had plans in place to do so, but the very next morning gave in to their demands without further provocation. Some of the characters seem to have superhuman powers where they can just walk into heavily armed premises alone, take down people, take what they wanted and walk out unscathed. The effect of the supernova caused people to have a variety of symptoms, all bad and some zombie-like. The cure for this was found to be quite simple, laughable and also included an eating plan! There are a lot of different characters circulating throughout the series but very few of them were likeable, and a number of them are subjected to very uncomfortable stereotyping.

I like 'survival' type books but this boxset was quite a task to get through. I only persisted to the end because I thought/hoped it would get better.

This book was just ok, the storyline is a very familiar one which meant the book didn't really stand out from the rest in this genre. There wasn't a lot of character development here so when they died I didn't care about them. A lot of characters just came and went. The narrator did a pretty decent job.
