Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
Violette Toussaint is the caretaker at a cemetery in a small town in Bourgogne. Casual mourners, regular visitors, and sundry colleagues - gravediggers, groundskeepers, and a priest - visit her to warm themselves in her lodge, where laughter, companionship, and occasional tears mix with the coffee she offers them. Her life is lived to the rhythms of their funny, moving confidences. But her routine is disrupted by the arrival of the local police chief, who insists on scattering the ashes of his recently deceased mother on the gravesite of a complete stranger.

Good story, narration not so much
Revisado: 02-04-23
I found the story interesting; I was surprised by the choice to use a narrator with an American accent given that the story is that of a French woman. Also the French accent used for the names and places is very off putting, even to someone who is not a native French speaker. And yet, I enjoyed the story, it kept me engaged.

A Rotten Egg of a Story
Revisado: 09-29-21
This was a terrible read - a meandering plot, unlikable characters, and UGH, the constant use of ridiculously bad metaphors throughout the book in almost every paragraph! The writing style was juvenile, blatant, and unappealing. I only finished the book because it was chosen for our Book Club, and sometimes the worst books make for an interesting conversation.

Horrible. Waste of time. I had to stop a couple of hours in. I tried to return this title to Audible early on but I couldn’t get a refund. So I tried to listen a bit longer, but i was so annoyed by the plot I just had to stop.

Historia
Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, its strong cups of coffee - and, now, a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff - thanks to her adorably meddlesome parents who nominated her - and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. But a teenage girl is missing, a kidnapper is on the loose, and all of this is reminding Sunshine why she left Del Sol in the first place.

A fun ride, taken to excess
Revisado: 05-29-20
I really was enjoying the book, I love the banter between characters, the quirky town of Del Sol, and the multiple detective mysteries. My frustration was that the book didn’t wrap up more neatly at the end. The final mystery is left dangling to keep us waiting for the next story in this series from this author. But the mystery remaining is so blatantly obvious to the reader, that it’s frustrating that the protagonist isn’t able to see what is right in front of her nose. So that is the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. I’ll probably listen to the next story just to get that satisfying ending I want, though I’ll be very annoyed if the author waits until the end of that book for the protagonist to finally be enlightened.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Revisado: 07-28-19
One of the best autobiographies I’ve ever read! And I loved listening to Trevor Noah reading it himself on Audible. It is an intelligent, thoughtful, truly harrowing account of his life born during apartheid, and then living most of his childhood in post-apartheid in South Africa. Highest recommendation!
