Awesome narration
Revisado: 08-28-23
I echo others reviews praising the content. I felt like I was walking around in the village like it was my own home. But I want to rave about the narration. So many characters, so many voices and ages and personalities, all executed to perfection.

Historia
In fifth edition of The Fundamentals of Ethics, author Russ Shafer-Landau employs a uniquely engaging writing style to introduce students to the essential ideas of moral philosophy. Offering more comprehensive coverage of the good life, normative ethics, and metaethics than any other text of its kind, this book also addresses issues that are often omitted from other texts, such as the doctrine of doing and allowing, the doctrine of double effect, ethical particularism, the desire-satisfaction theory of well-being, moral error theory, and Ross' theory of prima facie duties.

Seriously boring
Revisado: 08-07-23
I suppose this isn't intended to be a thrilling read. But surely the author could have done a better job of making this topic engaging. Instead he drones on and on with repeating the same syllogisms and arguments over and over. The basic content of this book is available on a quick Google search. Don't waste your time.

Historia
The Middle Ages harshly tested every aspect of human perseverance, imagination, and survival. Living conditions were squalid for almost everyone except the ruling elite, and most of the riches of Western culture were preserved in monasteries and on other continents. And into this setting came widespread famines, prolonged wars, and plagues that marked Europe's late medieval period as one of the most harrowing in recorded history.

First rate
Revisado: 04-25-22
I have read many histories of the Middle Ages. This one was unique. it wasn't so much about historical events, although those were covered. It was more about the factors that brought about change to the very way the people thought about themselves and their world in the 13th and 14th centuries. Factors like war, and plague, and famine, and rebellion, and the profound impact these had on the very fabric of society. The emergence of secularization, changing politics, a sense of nationality... Special focus was given to marginalized people, like Jews, and Muslims, and lepers, and women. In short, I highly recommend this listen to anyone interested in the dramatic transformations that began taking place in this period.

Thorough, academically sound, refreshing
Revisado: 01-16-22
Thoroughly researched story not just about the life of Francis, but also the historical and cultural and economic contexts of the time. Proceeds then to an intriguing analysis of the disputes and controversies and splits in the Franciscan order over the next few centuries. Even covers missionary activity in China and the Americas, though in less detail. Narration was a bit slow and monotone, but didn't seriously detract. I highly recommend this listen to anyone interested in St. Francis and Franciscan history.

Technical but very exciting
Revisado: 01-02-22
My high school chemistry class was a long time ago. So I inevitably got lost in some of the technicalities. It helped that Haden explained things like oxidation and isotopes, but parts of it were still hard to get through for me. Even so, his excitement about the subject was contagious, and the story most exciting. I'm so glad I stuck with it to the end.

Strange
Revisado: 10-31-21
This story was strange from the start. I kept expecting some kind of clear resolution. Instead, the theories about what happened just got more and more bizarre. I read true crime and who-done-its because I like the satisfaction of closure by the end, ideally with some measure of surprise. Let's just say I did not find this podcast satisfying. I will say, though, the narration was excellent.

Priceless lost history
Revisado: 10-17-21
What a gem! The story of Eliza Lucas, nearly lost to history, comes alive with this compelling and dramatic telling. Narration was superb. I had no idea about any of this. I'm glad I know now. Makes me stronger.

In these 10 lectures, you will better understand where many of our most indelible images of witchcraft come from and how the religious pursuit of witches across Europe and into the Americas in the early modern period spread fear and violence like a contagion, for generations.

Historia
While it’s easy to get caught up - and, rightfully so - in the art of the Renaissance, you cannot have a full, rounded understanding of just how important these centuries were without digging beneath the surface, without investigating the period in terms of its politics, its spirituality, its philosophies, its economics, and its societies. Do just that with these 48 lectures that consider the European Renaissance from all sides, that disturb traditional understandings, that tip sacred cows, and that enlarges our understanding of how the Renaissance revolutionized the Western world.

Too much politics
Revisado: 09-26-21
I was hoping for more about the development of art and architecture and science. Most of the focus is on politics, battles, and jockeying for power. I confess I got lost in all the details. I'm sure that stuff is important. It's just not what I was interested in. I only got through a few lectures before putting it aside.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Awesome
Revisado: 07-01-21
Gripping. Desperately sad. You will need lots of tissues. But it's not just a book about disaster and hardship. It's about personal growth and transformation. It's about survival in the worst of times, but it's not just about survival. It's about courage. It's about hope. It's about finding strength when there is no more strength inside. It's about finding one's voice. The narration? Awesome.
