Why would you pick Derik Perkins?
Revisado: 12-13-24
I mean my title says it all. It was a decent first book that probably would have given 4-5 stars had this been narrated by a reader with with some level of emotional reaction to the words he’s reading. I think I’ve got to give it to Perkins - I thought Steven Brand was monotonous and repetitive with voices, and I delay series with him because it’s hard to push through. But in this there is just no link between the pacing of the dialogue and the urgency of spoken lines. It kills almost all of the suspense and honestly makes me question whether it’s the writing that isn’t gripping me, or the blandness with which it’s delivered.
That is not to say I think this is a terrible narrator. It is to say that he should not be narrating this type of literature.
As far as the writing, I think he’s a talented writer and the story pulls me in, but I may have returned it for a credit if I hadn’t gotten it on a super sale. And none of this is to say that this is not a good series, it’s just a first book and it’s right by Perkins
And I’m having trouble because I don’t wanna dissuade you from this author. The first book doesn’t get the best reviews, but the second and third are highly rated. And Perkins just kills it. I’m hoping the story gets good enough that I can ignore the narration like I do with Quintrell.
If you can get through a mediocre first book and the narration, I am hopeful it will improve.
The other thing is, I think he was a little bit lazy with the amount of things taken from other series. To be fair, he takes liberally from everyone, but instead of coming up with his own magic system, they stole Jordan‘s. The description elemental magic has been comprised of air, earth, wind water, and spirit. And he talks about the thread of how things are woven. Maybe I’m nitpicking. It just seems like he was lazy instead of improvising something of his own.
But I think it’s a good story And if the second book really improves like it’s supposed to I am hopeful

The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

Revisado: 10-24-24
This book was great. I had trouble getting through dark age, but lightbringer really redeemed the series. Darrow has found himself again, and the heart thats been missing from this second trilogy is finally back in full force. Easily one of the best books in the series - maybe tied with morning star for my favorite. Absolutely worth reading iron gold and dark age just to get back to here. Excellent book.

One of the best in the whole series. It gets really good in this book.
Revisado: 10-07-24
I’ve read or listened to this book well over a dozen times. Though this is the first time (obviously) with Rosamund Pike voicing it. I love the Michael Kramer and Kate Reading versions and have listened many times. It’s hard to say which version I like better, but pike is absolutely amazing. Her ability to voice so many different characters by herself is uncanny. She does a masterful job. It may take ten years but I hope she finishes recording the entire series. Wheel of time remains my absolute all time favorite. There is nothing like it in scale. It is truly epic fantasy as it’s best.

Give it time to get interesting. It’s a great book.
Revisado: 07-11-24
Book aside, and this is a fantastic book as you’d expect, this is a case study in how not to narrate a character with a LOUD ANNOYING voice. The performance is dead on and the narrator does an excellent interpretation of the characters. Unfortunately, given that the character with the most dialog in the book it’s described as the loudest most talkative protagonist that you’re ever likely to meet.
Because of this listening to this book - especially when you’re trying to relax - is really an exercise in patience. You truly feel the annoyance that the other characters must feel when subject to this garrulous loud mouth. It’s akin to reading a book where all the dialog was printed in all caps.
The book begins to show its promise 15-20 chapters in, but sticking out the audio is really a chore. If you find yourself unable to listen to lonesome dove for this reason I strongly recommend reading the book. It’s really an American treasure.

If you’re reading this before reading Cradle, drop what you’re doing and read it. All of it. Assuming you’ve already finished cradle, you’ll like this too, at the end of book two now, this is shaping up to be by will wight’s second best series to date, by far. Much closer to cradle than to house of blades,
If you read the last horizon and thought it was great, you won’t be disappointed. I’m not sure it was better than book one, but I enjoyed it just as much as book 1.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Wow. An entirely different writer (in a good way).
Revisado: 06-27-23
Firstly, for those of you that dig the ‘Roman based world’, check out Codex Alera by Jim Butcher. I have a feeling this book is just the beginning.
I read the licanthus trilogy, Islington’s first series (and only other published work I know of). That series was great but the first book in particular was weak. Ended up being a fantastic trilogy, but a little on the YA side.
Throughout this listen I kept saying to myself ‘I can’t believe this is the same author’. And I thought the other series was good. The story is engrossing, the plot is unpredictable, rewarding, and has somewhat of a Patrick Rothfuss kind of vibe - a book that you want to read because you are so invested in the characters that you don’t even notice the absence of the action scenes common to most good (and bad) fantasy. That is not to say the book is without fight scenes, because it surely is not.
The character development is fascinating and draws you in. The world building is more vague, but that’s because the characters are very much in the dark, almost as much as the reader.
I am thoroughly impressed with every aspect of this book, would heartily recommend it to fans of fantasy for certain, but also for everyone else. I have over 200 books in my collection, and this one will probably be reread every time the next book comes out.
All around great book. Several twists you never saw coming and a tantalizing cliff hanger at the end. Despite that, like Rothfuss, this book leaves you feeling complete, yet looking towards what comes next.
