Historia
If, like Kane, you’re a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again—by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide—and when to shoot. But some places don’t play by the rules. Some places are too dangerous, even for a man of Kane’s experience. The badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan meet are such a place—a place where violence is the only way to survive.

Strange and awesome!
Revisado: 07-06-24
Like others, I was a little disappointed this wasn’t a sequel to I Am Pilgrim, which is one of my favorite novels. But it’s so good. It is long, and it’s essentially three novels—the third of which is VERY different than the first two. Ambitious and well done.

Nothing is more inspiring than a big vision that becomes a triumphant, new reality. Think of how the Empire State Building went from a sketch to the jewel of New York's skyline in twenty-one months, or how Apple’s iPod went from a project with a single employee to a product launch in eleven months.

Wow, even better than I had hoped
Revisado: 09-21-23
So much great stuff in here regardless of the size of the project, but especially for huge projects. And it’s presented with an engaging, don’t want to put it down readability.
I bought this book to help me better lead my company’s projects. But it’s hard not to see the bigger potential. If our politics were not so broken in the US, we’d be following the prescription laid out here and supporting and taking on big, ambitious projects that would create tons of good working-class (and up) jobs now while securing our children’s future.

Historia
Lachlan Kite is a member of BOX 88, an elite transatlantic black-ops outfit so covert that not even MI6 and the CIA are certain of its existence - but even the best spy can't anticipate every potential threat in a world where dangerous actors lurk around every corner. At the funeral of his childhood best friend, Lachlan falls into a trap that drops him into the hands of a potentially deadly interrogation, with his pregnant wife, also abducted, being held as collateral for the information he's sworn on his own life to protect.

One of Cumming’s best yet
Revisado: 07-17-23
I love Cumming’s books—especially the Thomas Kell trilogy and The Moroccan Girl. But Box 88 is probably my favorite.
Seems like spy novels fall into two categories now days; The super-cynical or the ridiculous super-hero type. Cumming writes smart, believable spy novels inhabited by rich characters and filled with intricate tradecraft and exotic locales.
Box 88 most definitely fits this bill in all respects. I can hardly wait to see where he takes Lachlan Kite and us from here.
And, Charlie Ansen, the narrator, is as good as it gets with this type of material.

Historia
The story of how The Godfather was made is as dramatic, operatic, and entertaining as the film itself. Over the years, many versions of various aspects of the movie’s fiery creation have been told - sometimes conflicting, but always compelling. Mark Seal sifts through the evidence, has extensive new conversations with director Francis Ford Coppola and several heretofore silent sources, and complements them with colorful interviews with key players including actors Al Pacino, James Caan, Talia Shire, and others.

Historia
A few rare leaders have learned to embrace a new organizational shape and mindset: Constellations. Organizations designed as constellations are dynamic and flexible networks of distinct yet interwoven individuals. Each member of the team feels like a singular star and is also connected to others to form something greater. That is how Visa reimagined how we pay for things, how Wikipedia beat the richest company in the world and how Barack Obama and his grassroots team revolutionized political campaigning. These leaders did what most leaders dread - they gave away power.

Big ideas in a compact package
Revisado: 06-18-21
Barzun didn’t set out to write a bestseller about leadership here, his ambition is to change the world. And I think he may have succeeded.
Having read a lot of books in the same general space as this one—leadership, public policy, history—and especially with the books that are advocating a new way of doing or looking at things, I usually end up thinking they were about twice as long as they needed to be. They’re basically a TED Talk with a bunch of anecdotes to turn them into a book. With this book, I was left wishing there was more.
Barzun seems to have wanted to be careful not to obscure his broader thesis by making it too much about himself. But, I found the parts about his own story super-compelling and would have loved to hear more. Author: please write a memoir!

He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. Really loved this book
Revisado: 12-28-19
Cumming writes believable, smart, engrossing espionage novels, and this is one of my favorites. What is so cool about The Moroccan Girl is that it’s a super-modern international spy thriller told in an old-school, romantic, Le Carre style, and it works as both.
Also, the narrator is brilliant.

Historia
For college admissions help, give your child that "unfair" advantage in applying to college, without cheating, offering bribes, using legacy, or giving donations. Here's the kind of insider information that’s made the author's own clients refer him to their friends for the past 17 years. It's a free, fast, and entertaining listen that's designed for the hard-bitten realist who takes nothing at face value, especially in light of the college admissions scandal of 2019.

Probably the most annoying thing I’ve ever listened to
Revisado: 07-03-19
Here’s how the summary should read: A know-it-all type conveying basic information as if it’s some profound hidden nugget of truth he discovered—and with annoying, transparent bias to boot.
There actually is some useful information in here if you’re a complete beginner on this subject, but there are better, more objective and less annoying sources for this information.

The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

This is a bad*$$ book written by a bad dude. But the book is not just about him.
I knew nothing about Goggins when I bought the book. Truly inspirational story and unique perspective on overcoming failure and how anyone can reach their goals. It’s also really cool how the audio version was done as part podcast with additional insights/anecdotes from the author.
I’m really thankful that the author wrote this book and that I decided to buy it. I feel different today than I did when I hit “add to cart.”
