Historia
February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. “My poor boy, he was too good for this earth,” the president says at the time. “God has called him home.”

Historia
In a world devastated by nuclear war with humanity on the edge of extinction, aliens finally make contact. They rescue those humans they can, keeping most survivors in suspended animation while the aliens begin the slow process of rehabilitating the planet. When Lilith Iyapo is "awakened", she finds that she has been chosen to revive her fellow humans in small groups by first preparing them to meet the utterly terrifying aliens, then training them to survive on the wilderness that the planet has become. But the aliens cannot help humanity without altering it forever.

3way with aliens
Revisado: 06-14-21
Could have been good science fiction, but the alien sex was too distracting for me.
And the weird “reverse grooming”, I’ve no idea what else to call it, creeped me out.

Historia
The day Fatima forgot her name, Death paid a visit. From hereon in she would be known as Sankofa - a name that meant nothing to anyone but her, the only tie to her family and her past. Her touch is death, and with a glance a town can fall. And she walks - alone, except for her fox companion - searching for the object that came from the sky and gave itself to her when the meteors fell and when she was yet unchanged; searching for answers.

Original and wonderfully written. A beautiful story of recognizing the a power must be controlled to be useful. Uncontrolled power is dangerous.

Historia
Jeremy works at the Video Hut in Nevada, Iowa. It's a small town in the center of the state - the first a in Nevada pronounced ay. This is the late 1990s, and even if the Hollywood Video in Ames poses an existential threat to Video Hut, there are still regular customers, a rush in the late afternoon. It's good enough for Jeremy: It's a job, quiet and predictable, and it gets him out of the house, where he lives with his dad and where they both try to avoid missing Mom, who died six years ago in a car wreck.

But I’m from here...
Revisado: 12-10-17
This book really struck me, but maybe it’s because I’m from here. I’ve witnessed those conversations about who lives where, when they moved, where they are now since my childhood. As a teen, I swore I’d never be involved in anything so mundane, now much older I’m right in the thick of it.
I’m also of an age that remembers video tapes, the excitement around getting a camcorder to make your own home movies, and I think that makes a difference in how you hear the story.
These characters were familiar to me, but again, I’m from here, I knew my own version of these characters.
I hope John Darnielle continues to write novels. And I hope he writes another about Iowa. Few people see the internal strangeness many of us hold dear, but John writes it well.

If you love Tim Gunn...
Revisado: 10-09-17
You'll love this audio book. I actually started with the text, but quickly switch so I could hear Tim teach me these lessons and tell me these stories.
There were a few times where I wasn't sure how the story related to the topic at hand, but I didn't care, I wanted to hear it anyway.
Recommended for fans of Tim, fashion, and those looking for a few tips on how to teach or mentor.

Historia
Join in meditations developed at one of the world's great meditation centers and gain ideal support for a daily mindfulness practice. Here are 4 authentic meditations from Plum Village, the celebrated Zen sanctuary and peace center founded by Thich Nhat Hanh in southern France. Hanh is a meditation master who Thomas Merton has described as "the Zen monk who sees beyond life and death." These inspiring guided meditations teach conscious breathing for calming the mind and cultivating joy, body appreciation and attunement practice, and how to transform your anger into seeds of kindness.

Be aware of what you're getting!
Revisado: 05-30-09
The description calls these 'guided meditations', I wouldn't. They are great meditations, but they are not guided. It's a short talk (a few minutes) and then a long section of gong (the first one is forty minutes, the others are shorter).
If it's what you want, it's great, but if you want something really guided try one of the several 'How to Meditate' options. (I'm partial to Pema Chodron, but that's just my opinion.)
