Historia
David Mamet went to Hollywood on top—a super successful playwright summoned west in 1980 to write a vehicle for Jack Nicholson. He arrived just in time to meet the luminaries of old Hollywood and revel in the friendship of giants like Paul Newman, Mike Nichols, Bob Evans, and Sue Mengers. Over the next forty years, Mamet wrote dozens of scripts, was fired off dozens of movies, and directed eleven himself. In Everywhere an Oink Oink, he revels of the taut and gag-filled professionalism of the film set.

Why yes, Hollywood is as bad as you thought.
Revisado: 01-02-24
Mr Mamet has a serious character flaw that is going to make some of his readers disappointed. Namely, he has integrity. Precisely , he has too much integrity to name names and slander people with salacious gossip, something he surely could do if he chose to with all of his decades in Hollywood.
Still his spot on betrayal of all the Corruptions and dishonesty that have to be endured for people to make a movie are well worth the Layman's time. His skewering of the fatuous political opinions of celebrities is worth the price of the book alone. He does make a comparison with what the Masters back in the day might reacted and how their art might have been ruined if they had producers over their shoulder micromanaging them. It does have to be mentioned that painters only had to come up with the funds for a brush and canvas and some paint. When you're asking people to put up millions if not tens of millions of dollars, you can rest assured that their constant badgering and interruption is a certainty.
I listened to the book while on a road trip and found myself at least a half a dozen times laughing so hard that my head fell backwards, and in these sometimes dark and depressingly humorless times, that's worth a few bucks.
I recommend it.

Historia
Milton Friedman was, alongside John Maynard Keynes, the most influential economist of the twentieth century. His work was instrumental in the turn toward free markets that defined the 1980s, and his full-throated defenses of capitalism and freedom resonated with audiences around the world. It’s no wonder the last decades of the twentieth century have been called “the Age of Friedman”—or that analysts have sought to hold him responsible for both the rising prosperity and the social ills of recent times. Historian Jennifer Burns tells Friedman’s extraordinary story with the nuance it deserves.

A timely and important book.
Revisado: 12-30-23
Although scholarly and sometimes dense, this book is extremely important for anyone interested in modern economics, as we all should be. One thing that struck me throughout is a curiosity if someone like Freidman could even find a place at a major university today. His detractors seem petty with their personal attacks, something he refrained from doing, as he was only interested in debating ideas. although no one in positions of authority ever embraced his ideas completely, they are well interwoven in the modern policies of almost every Fed Chairman and policymaker of any merit. The 21st century clearly needs another Milton Friedman, it's difficult to see one on the horizon. A fantastic book.
As a humorous aside, recently the New York Times published an article by part of the woke Mafia that controls our media warning parents what to watch out for to make sure their children weren't being radicalized. One of the items on the list was to make sure your children weren't watching videos of Milton Friedman speaking. That would be the Nobel Prize winning Economist Milton friedman. This is a great indicator of how far the termites have spread into our body politics, because no matter what you think of his ideas debating them is mandatory in the modern world.

Historia
For millennia the location of the Nile River’s headwaters was shrouded in mystery. In the 19th century, there was a frenzy of interest in ancient Egypt. At the same time, European powers sent off waves of explorations intended to map the unknown corners of the globe—and extend their colonial empires.

I became thoroughly enthralled with Sir Richard Burton after reading the biography of him many many years ago. This book does a fantastic job of encapsulating the entire English exploration in search of the source of the Nile. I don't think a better book about the subject could be written.

The Scots-Irish were 40 percent of the Revolutionary War army; they included the pioneers Daniel Boone, Lewis and Clark, Davy Crockett, and Sam Houston; they were the writers Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain; and they have given America numerous great military leaders, including Stonewall Jackson, Ulysses S. Grant, Audie Murphy, and George S. Patton, as well as most of the soldiers of the Confederacy (only five percent of whom owned slaves, and who fought against what they viewed as an invading army).

What an important piece of the American puzzle the Scots Irish histor is. I would wager you that a majority of Americans are completely unaware of that history and this book goes a long way towards plugging that hole. Everyone interested in history should read this book.

Historia
In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Spanning more than five centuries, Cuba provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Best book available on the subject.
Revisado: 11-04-23
On a subject this fraught, there's always going to be accusations of bias. I didn't really see it. This is an extremely thorough, extremely well researched book. This was a horrible conflict with terrible atrocities on both sides, that has been long overshadowed by the much more horrible world war that immediately followed it. But had nothing else happened, this would be a great War for the ages. Tragic loss of life, tragic story, and a very good book on the subject.

In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

From 1974 to 2012, during his years as publisher and editor-in-chief of the New Republic, Martin Peretz was a familiar presence on the political scene. In its time under his leadership, the magazine was always fresh, erudite, contrarian, and brave. Anyone interested in finding out the most distinctive expert takes on the issues that mattered—whether they be domestic or international, cultural or political—knew that the New Republic was required reading.
