Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning history of World War II chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of the Japanese empire, from the invasion of Manchuria and China to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Told from the Japanese perspective, The Rising Sun is, in the author’s words, "a factual saga of people caught up in the flood of the most overwhelming war of mankind, told as it happened - muddled, ennobling, disgraceful, frustrating, full of paradox."

Incredibly well-researched and devoid of political spin, iconoclasm or shaming, "The Rising Sun" is an interesting and easy to listen to history of what we think of as the Pacific Theater during WWII. I greatly appreciate the attention to detail and behind the scenes discussions leading up to and during the war. I will go so far as to say I think this should be required reading/listening for all Americans.

A surprisingly good book. Well-researched with lots of entertaining personal stories. No new-age special butterfly nonsense and no hard pick-up-artist gimmicks, just good data. My only complaint might be that the data used are not comprehensive in scope and omit or undervalue certain cultures.

Historia
At once provocative and laugh-out-loud funny, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother ignited a global parenting debate with its story of one mother’s journey in strict parenting. Amy Chua argues that Western parenting tries to respect and nurture children’s individuality, while Chinese parents typically believe that arming children with skills, strong work habits, and inner confidence prepares them best for the future.

Good story but basically self-promotion
Revisado: 06-21-15

I enjoy "Battle Hymn" mostly because of the contrast to the un-involved parents of my youth. Listen to enjoy, not for parenting tips. It is the time and resources expended on children that makes them great, not Amy's hard-line attitude. Her endless stereotyping and equally endless attempts at bragging (her dog has descended from wolves [sorry Amy, they ALL have]) might put off sensitive people.
If you think of Amy as a that special friend who loves themselves a little too much and relax you might enjoy this as much as I did.

Historia
In his classic guide to understanding the opposite sex, Dr. John Gray provides a practical and proven way for men and women to improve their communication and relationships by acknowledging the differences between them. Once upon a time Martians and Venusians met, fell in love, and had happy relationships together because they respected and accepted their differences. Then they came to Earth and amnesia set in: They forgot they were from different planets.

This book is famous enough that I won't go into detail on the contents. I will say two things: #1 both partners need to read/listen and apply the techniques and #2 Dr. Gray needs to hire someone else (Henry Cloud?) to narrate. An hour of listening to him speak make me yearn for the comparatively masculine Ira Glass to talk to me.

Factory Girls is one of only a couple of audiobooks I have enjoyed listening to more than once. It provides an insight into the lives of the women who make the things we buy in the West and follows their personal ambitions and lives.
The book takes a digression as the author talks about her family history, this is part of the overall "migration story" which is the crux of the book. Although this is interesting, it does not quite fit and I would prefer to have the time be used to discuss the workers themselves. Don't let this stop you from an otherwise great listen, however!

Briefly, this is an excellent book. The story line is interesting, touching and positive. The use of two narrators greatly maximizes the listening experience. I have several other audiobooks which have a single narrator who changes his voice to sound Asian or, worse, to sound as an Asian female. Always a disaster. The narrators here a top-notch and believable and the story line is terrific.

Are you frustrated with a lack of results at work? Have you hit a wall? Are you uninspired, stuck in a rut, feeling underappreciated? Well, good news: your success is not up to your boss, your manager, your employees, or the economy. It's up to YOU. Business is never bad, people are just bad at being in business. If that makes you mad, this book is for you. Larry Winget hacks through the bad advice given in most business books.

Unhelpful for strong workers
Revisado: 01-30-15
Any additional comments?
Based on the other reviews of this book, I seem to be an outlier in that I did not find it helpful. My issues are as follows:#1 It is useless for strong employees. He discusses at some length that people who are at work need to be doing work. We have all worked with people who will spend their working hours on facebook. I doubt too many people who purchase this book are the same who spend the day not working. If you work hard, work smart and focus on productivity already you will learn nothing here. #2. There is a strong focus on managing. Nothing wrong with this and if you are a manager you may find it helpful. If you are not a manager a good portion of the book will not be relevant. #3 Periodic nonsense. He endorses firing your worst employees (makes sense) and your best employees (he thinks they will quit), leaving the middle 60% to fill these rolls expecting those in the middle to become great like the people he just fired. Now you have another batch of great employees which one should expect you should now fire. Another example is making a "to be done" list rather than a "to do list." #4 You already know this guy. You know a guy (and its usually a guy) who thinks that "back in the day" all employees were great. The guy who complains about company policy to the checkout person who plays no role in creating policy. The guy who thinks he knows everything. This is that guy.

Historia
At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

More comforting than helpful
Revisado: 01-30-15
Any additional comments?
To be clear, I really enjoyed this book. I think a lot of introverts living in an extrovert world will have a strong sense of familiarity with the stories.
For me, this is more of a comforting listen, rather than a book to make my life better. The author discusses at length tips for parents and teachers of introverts- these suggestions may be helpful (I have no children and am not a teacher).
I don't find this book to be particularly helpful because the central issue of being an introvert in an extrovert world is still there. I suspect that it will be more helpful to an introverted individual to pretend to be an extrovert (even at the expense of productivity) than to maximize his own potential as an introvert. This is just my own opinion, however.

Revisado: 06-13-11
I gave this five stars because it is the best Chinese learning material that I have found so far. The music really helps prevent the boredom found with other programs, although if you want to sit and study something like "Chinese for Dummies" may be a better choice. The material is repeated several times with the segment which prevents the need for rewinding. I enjoy the voices of both narrators as well.
