A good bit of this lecture has not aged well. In fact, more than a few of the examples mentioned have been proven to be exactly the opposite of Shermer's claims. While everyone will filter information through their personal bias, when presented with new data we should incorporate it into our overall knowledge and challenge our thoughts and opinions - Learn better / Do better.

Despite Shermer's bias, there are still a few valuable points which explain why humans have a negativity bias. Had the focus been left without pontification, it would have been far more enjoyable. Instead, a good portion of the time it feels more like an exercise in "Do as I say, not as I do." Thankfully, it was a free listen, which is reasonably close to the overall value.

My eyes rolled more than a few times through this book. Overall a good story with an excellent cast of characters that carried the story through a few weaker lines. And several moments of brilliance - especially in the music - to more than make up for less than stellar moments. The only downside is the volume levels in the segues of scenes was not levelized, so I constantly had to adjust. Not bothersome enough to stop listening before the end - just an aggravation. Would consider this perfect for a lazy day listen.

Seeing narration by Kevin Nealon and Natasha Lyonne should tell you everything you need to know about The Zeta Family. It's like a good bowl of granola - a little nutty, a little crunchy, and a little flaky (well, the aliens were anyway) but good for you and will make your heart happy... or at least give you something to grin about. I don't feel cheated out of the 3 hours it took to listen to it and will no doubt listen to it again in the future just for the giggles. One more thing...the narrator... totally pointless and yet critically important to the story overall ;)

Freeborn does an excellent job of shining a spotlight on most everything subpar in the self-defense arena, especially in challenging outdated theories and over-inflated egos. Several sacred cows get hit.

As a student, there is plenty of food for thought to challenge thinking on what you need to know. As an instructor, there is plenty of food for thought about what you should be teaching. For both - it becomes crystal clear - you're probably not a SWAT Jesus Ninja Operator and poking holes in paper targets at the local range isn't going to make you High Speed-Low Drag when SHTF.

Throughout VoM, it's apparent that self-defense is far more than what many promote it to be. It's also commendable that he calls out the entire 2A Community on the integrity of our words- he's spot on that words matter.... "Tactical"; 'nuff said.

There were a couple of aspects/ subjects which might have made the book more appealing to a broader audience but, 1) they don't take away from the value of Freeborn's book and 2) I doubt he'll care to address them in any future publications or classes. This oddly enough, reflects back on the one antiquated sacred cow that didn't get hit. It's ok; we're still promoting the value of Varg's VoM... we're accustomed to being the overlooked demographic.

Almost a decade ago, this book probably had a lot of good information for someone new to emergency planning. But because of better emergency management training and planning by governmental agencies and community organizations as well as advancements in technology, much of the information in the book is outdated. Using this book as part of personal planning would be on par with gathering information from a focus group on social media, slightly less valuable than visiting Ready (dot) gov.

I can see it being useful for someone trying to understand the history, how's and why's, and advancements in this arena. I fail to see how it could be beneficial to anyone looking to make actual preparations to manage an emergency as it has not aged well. The author might consider revising to address planning and preparations with recent advancements after consulting with some experts in the various fields covered.
