Historia
On an April day in 1937, the sky opens and fire rains down upon the small Spanish town of Guernica. Seventeen-year-old Sibi and her family are caught up in the horror. Griff, an American military attaché, pulls Sibi from the wreckage, and it’s only the first time he saves her life in a span of hours. When Germany claims no involvement in the attack, insisting the Spanish Republic was responsible, Griff guides Sibi to lie to Nazi officials. If she or her sisters reveal that they saw planes bearing swastikas, the gestapo will silence them—by any means necessary.

An intense and powerful story of bravery, intelligence and love.

I loved this book even though it took me a few chapters to know it would be a fantastic story. The historic backdrop had me Googling maps and WWII facts alongside the storyline so that I learned and was thoroughly entertained once the story unfolded.

Historia
In a small Southern town where loyalty to family and to "your people" carries the weight of a sacred oath, defying those unspoken rules can be a deadly proposition. After 15 years of growing up in the Ozark hills with his widowed mother, high-school freshman Boady Sanden is beyond ready to move on. He dreams of glass towers and cityscapes, driven by his desire to be anywhere other than Jessup, Missouri. The new kid at St. Ignatius High School, if he isn't being pushed around, he is being completely ignored.

I didn’t want it to end.
Revisado: 07-19-23
This is a thoughtful and nicely crafted story evoking empathy and fondness for the characters. This is Eskens third book I’ve listen to and think it’s my favorite.

Historia
Nestled into the cliffs in southern Italy's Amalfi coast, Positano is an artist's vision, with rows of brightly hued houses perched above the sea and picturesque staircases meandering up and down the hillside. Santina, still a striking woman despite old age and the illness that saps her last strength, is spending her final days at her home, Villa San Vito. The magnificent 18th-century palazzo is very different from the tiny house in which she grew up. And as she decides its fate, she must confront the choices that led her here so long ago.

Gorgeous storytelling that carried me on a journey far away from myself to a place we all want to be.

I loved this story in every way. The beauty of the characters and how they lived their lives is told so exquisitely. Of course the setting is somewhere we would all love to be. The narrator was perfect in telling it. I’m sad that the story has ended. I could listen to it all over again.

Historia
In 1919 the Turner sisters and their parents are barely scraping by. Their father is a low-paid boot stitcher in Johnson City, New York, and the family is always one paycheck away from eviction. When their father's hand is crushed and he can no longer work, their irrepressible mother decides that the vaudeville stage is their best - and only - chance for survival.

A good listen with excellent narrators telling a story about women 100+ years ago when life was very different.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Like a long relaxing afternoon
Revisado: 05-22-20
The story is not filled with high drama or quiet connections, but instead it unfolds at a slow and steady pace telling a family’s story as it unfolds over the years. Ann Patchett is as always a masterful story teller and her characters are so nuanced and smartly developed that I felt like I knew them before the story was ended. I really enjoyed it!
