Historia
In 1857, a woman escaped enslavement on a North Carolina plantation and fled to a farm in New York. In hiding, she worked on a manuscript that would make her famous long after her death. The novel, The Bondwoman’s Narrative, was first published in 2002 to great acclaim, but the author’s identity remained unknown. Over a decade later, Professor Gregg Hecimovich unraveled the mystery of the author’s name and, in The Life and Times of Hannah Crafts, he finally tells her story.

Great companion piece to 'The Bondwoman's Narrative’, not so much as a standalone

Stunning Research
Revisado: 02-04-24
A thorough research into possible authors of the novel along with a brilliant rendering of the times during which it was conceived and written including a dissection of different viewpoints. A scholarly presentation that reads as a mystery. I’ll listen to this again after I listen to (read) the novel itself, next on my list.

Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

Historia
As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Beautiful Imagery
Revisado: 07-17-20
I loved this book right from the opening sentence. The author, as both rigorous scientist and member of an indigenous community, highlights the tension between the "modern" way of viewing the earth, as an asset to be developed by industry, and a "traditional" way where earth is a gift to be enjoyed and shared by all. Even as a child she learned to navigate the differences. Her life could be seen and told as an irreconcilable conflict but she is able to weave the two together in the teaching of her own children and university students. It has made me all the more aware of how much we take for granted, how the simple acts of giving and gratitude are so important. The reading of the passage "Collateral Damage" is haunting and will stay with me forever.

Historia
In this landmark work on the Anasazi tribes of the Southwest, naturalist Craig Childs dives head-on into the mysteries of this vanished people. The various tribes that made up the Anasazi people converged on Chaco Canyon (New Mexico) during the 11th century to create a civilization hailed as "the Las Vegas of its day", a flourishing cultural center that attracted pilgrims from far and wide, and a vital crossroads of the prehistoric world. By the 13th century, however, Chaco's vibrant community had disappeared without a trace.

Wonderful overview
Revisado: 11-25-18
I am admittedly an ancient sites junkie and have been to a number of the sites which the author reviews and many many others I will never see. He puts everything into perspective and tells a winding story of how all these sites relate to each other, along the way showing how some long held myths do not hold up to scrutiny. Childs never loses that sense of wonder as if he is seeing each place anew. I absolutely loved this book; listened while I worked in my studio, in the car, before going to bed.

Historia
Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Fascinating
Revisado: 08-16-18
This comprehensive history takes you all around the world east west north south and into the tiniest corners of humanity to grand and immense populations, through pre-history to the latest academic and politicized discussion of changes in American language and vernacular.
