Good story but repetitive situations & need Davina Porter back
Revisado: 05-20-24
Loved the overall story but really don't like this narrator. As in the past couple narrations she's done, she really doesn't capture Devlin's voice. It's too slow and doesn't reflect what he's saying. When Devlin & Lovejoy are speaking, I often can't tell who's speaking as she does the same voice for both. Either bring back Davina Porter or pick someone who has a better range with the men. Also, I'm getting a little tired of the same scenarios in each book. I know by now that in every book, Devlin will see someone lurking outside his house and will be attacked at night at least 2 times by someone(s) who try to warn then kill him. Freshen up the ideas, please.

Historia
March, 1815. The Bourbon King Louis XVIII has been restored to the throne of France, Napoleon is in exile on the isle of Elba, and Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, and his wife, Hero, have traveled to Paris in hopes of tracing his long-lost mother, Sophie, the errant Countess of Hendon. But his search ends in tragedy when he comes upon the dying Countess in the wasteland at the tip of the Île de la Cité. Stabbed—apparently with a stiletto—and thrown from the bastions of the island's ancient stone bridge, Sophie dies without naming her murderer.

Bring Back Davina Porter
Revisado: 06-16-22
This new narrator spoke too slow, didn't give much emotion to any of the characters and made everyone sound much older than they were. Overall story was okay but it was hard to follow at points.

Historia
In this brilliantly imagined novel, acclaimed author C. W. Gortner brings Catherine to life in her own voice, allowing us to enter the intimate world of a woman whose determination to protect her family’s throne and realm plunged her into a lethal struggle for power. From the fairy-tale chateaux of the Loire Valley to the battlefields of the wars of religion to the mob-filled streets of Paris, this is the extraordinary untold journey of one of the most maligned and misunderstood women ever to be queen.

Character/Narrator make her seem like a child
Revisado: 07-09-18
The narrator for this is the wrong one to be the voice of Catherine de Medici. Too mild and young girl-like throughout the book, into her later years. Maybe the fact that she's American too, although her pronunciation of the French and Italian words is very well done. I'm all for getting a more sympathetic/understanding view of Catherine de Medici, but the character is written with very few faults, which isn't what documented history shows us. Definitely more in the realm of Fiction rather than Historical Fiction. Not sure if I will do another of this author's historical fiction novels.
