Beautifully narrated
Revisado: 12-04-23
I listened because the book was assigned to my high schooler, and I had never read the book myself. Although the book was well written and the narrator was perfect, I didn’t love the story. I couldn’t help thinking of how the people who thought they were helping Lennie were only causing themselves and others misery, which ultimately led to tragedy.

Historia
Some of the cruelest deeds of Japan's war in Asia did not occur on the battlefield, but in quiet, antiseptic medical wards in obscure parts of China. Far from front lines and prying eyes, Japanese doctors and their assistants subjected human guinea pigs to gruesome medical experiments in the name of science and Japan's wartime chemical and biological warfare research. Author Hal Gold draws upon a wealth of sources to construct a portrait of the Imperial Japanese Army's most notorious medical unit, giving an overview of its history and detailing its most shocking activities.

Horrors that history has buried
Revisado: 09-06-23
I had never heard of Unit 731 until a week ago. I immediately looked for a book on the topic and was glad to find this one for free with my Audible subscription. It’s not easy to listen to the horrors that occurred. It is a good reminder that all countries have horrors in their past. The only way forward is to learn and try to keep these atrocities from happening again.

A beautiful story about the complex mother/daughter paradigm. The movie follows the book almost exactly. The narrator did a perfect job and brought each story and character to life.

Historia
Four Chinese women, drawn together by the shadow of their past, meet in San Francisco to play mah jong, invest in stocks, eat dim sum, and to "say" stories to each other. Nearly 40 years later, one of the women has died, and her daughter arrives to take her place. However, the daughter never expected to learn of her mother's secret lifelong wish - and the tragic way in which it has come true. The revelation creates among the women an urgent need to remember the past.

Clear voice, easy to understand, no music
Revisado: 12-08-22
I was so pleased to find this, I have the exact same version on CD’s that I purchased 20+ years ago. I still love to pop those in my car, but wanted something I could listen to anytime. I now read the ESV, but didn’t find a version of that on Audible that I liked. There are lots of great audio Bibles out there, but I bought this one because it is voice only, with no music, and the narrator has no accent so it’s easy to understand, even when sped up. The version with the British narrator and music is also beautiful, but it’s hard to understand unless you are really concentrating. My only complaint is the chapter divisions, I wish it was sorted by books of the Bible to easily navigate. There is a reviewer who posted the chapter breakdown, so I will screenshot that and use if needed.

Can liberty survive in the hands of one all-powerful, unchallenged, and unelected bureaucrat? It wasn’t too long ago that the average American didn’t know who Anthony Fauci was. Now, after the coronavirus has spread nationwide, he’s arguably the most powerful bureaucrat in American history. But is it dangerous for a free society to concentrate so much power in the hands of an unelected official? Who or what holds Fauci accountable?

Historia
This is a story that starts off close and goes very big. The initial part of the story might sound familiar at first: it is about a platoon of mostly 19-year-old boys sent to Afghanistan, and an experience that ends abruptly in catastrophe. Their part of the story folds into the next: inexorably linked to those soldiers and never comprehensively reported before is the US Department of Defense’s quest to build the world’s most powerful biometrics database, with the ability to identify, monitor, catalog, and police people all over the world.

An Absolutely Must Listen To
Revisado: 01-14-21
I discovered Annie about 2 years ago. This year I listened to all her books available on Audible. She is an amazing storyteller. Her details really paint a full picture, and the people she tells about become so real, I feel like I’ve met them. Her voice is also very soothing, so I’m delighted she narrates her own books. This book was a little hard to listen to, because I know service members who have died in Afghanistan, and have loved ones that served there. It was raw, real, and so thought provoking. This book builds a lot on subjects discussed in The Pentagon’s Brain, and highlights an area that is getting a lot of news these days: bio-metrics, tracking, and government transparency. What I really appreciate about Annie’s style, is that she presents the facts, without making judgments, she lets the reader ponder and draw their own conclusions. She presents multiple sides to each story, and shows how blurred the lines can be, especially in the world of military and intelligence. I would recommend this book, and then go get all of them. Your mind will be blown. I’m eagerly awaiting her next release.
