Historia
Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music.

What an experience 👏 🙌
Revisado: 04-30-23
This book was we excellently written and performed. Almost immediately, I was emotionally engaged in young Ray's life: rooting for him, loving his grandma Nora and Aunt Rochelle and wanting to smack some other relatives upside their self-obsessed, greedy heads. There was a great subplot where some folks really got exactly what they deserved.. Very satisfying. The mystery part was really well done with plenty of red herrings along with real clues and a major surprise ending.

Historia
This is the story of how a nerdy, homeschooled kid in the church choir named John Stephens became the Grammy-winning, platinum-selling, genre-pushing pop star we know as John Legend. For a long time, he led a double life—excelling as a star student while his home life was in shambles, working in corporate America as a financial consultant while moonlighting as a musician in nightclubs, always straddling a line between the person he was and the person he wanted to be. These are his Words + Music.

Revisado: 10-10-22
I knew I liked John Legend's music and the person he appears to be as a coach on The Voice. Now I feel like I have some real insight into his character and upbringing and I am adding respect to my feelings about him. this wS a great performance with a good balance between sharing and music.. highly recommend it. Best Audible Original by far!!!

Historia
Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

This book brings us to a time in the not so distant when children are so isolated, families buy them Artificial Friends to help them. This story is told from the POV of one such A.F. and is quite engrossing. Book Club loved it except for the one who thought it too far-fetched. She us definitely NOT paying attention to robotics! Historia
Our current climate of partisan fury is not new, and in The Soul of America Meacham shows us how what Abraham Lincoln called the “better angels of our nature” have repeatedly won the day. Painting surprising portraits of Lincoln and other presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and LBJ, and illuminating the courage of influential citizen activists and civil rights pioneers, Meacham brings vividly to life turning points in American history. Each of these dramatic hours have been shaped by the contest to lead the country to look forward rather than back.

A ray of hope in a time without it
Revisado: 07-07-21
In its thoughtful examination of America's history, this book shed light on the constant shifting between our better angels and our demons in our history. Slavery , civil rights, gay rights , wo.en's rights,, the Japanese internments and all fear-based persecutions in our history were examined and the contexts in whi h they occurred were well explained. The roles of the presidents in each of these major historical decisions was made very clear and quite fascinating. I highly recommend this book especially to those who may write now Feel hopeless about the state of American government. Our better angels do eventually triumph although the cost is often very high.

This did not work well as an audiobook
Revisado: 04-21-21
These 2 stories from the point of view of 2 narrators jumped about in time in a way that was virtually incomprehensible in an audio book. Add to that the fact that the 2nd story's protagonist was completely self-absorbed and it w as s very difficult to get through. if I had had another book downloaded, I would probably have chucked this one.

All this and more is revealed in That's Not in My American History Book.

lots of cool tidbits. Badly read.
Revisado: 04-19-21
The information was fun and well organized. There were segments where the author did lists of things or series of short sentences that were sometimes hard to track.. I found the performer sub-par. He never stopped between 1 story and the next. He would go straight from one chapter into the next so you didn't know where those final sentences belonged: wrap up of 1 chapter or intro to the next. He took no more time between chapters than he did between sentences.. Made for frustrated listening because I couldn't tell what was happening. His voice was easy to listen to though.
