Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Couldn't stop listening!
Revisado: 08-12-23
I grew up just north of Lee county, and my daughter taught for a few years in Harlan Kentucky. This book is a masterpiece, paints a very accurate picture of both the allure of the area and the problems. Narration is also spot on, a few mispronunciations only a local would catch. Highly recommend!

From the beloved, best-selling author of All over but the Shoutin', a delectable, rollicking food memoir, cookbook, and loving tribute to a region, a vanishing history, a family, and, especially, his mother. In The Best Cook in the World, Rick Bragg finally preserves his heritage by telling the stories that framed his mother's cooking and education, from childhood into old age. Because good food always has a good story.

Not even done yet
Revisado: 09-05-19
Half way through, this is one of the most entertaining books ever, and the narration is awesome. I grew up in Appalachia, and this book unleashed a flood of memories of my Grandmother, who went through the depression as a widow with 8 children, husband killed in a sawmill accident, living off what you raise for yourself. The food is what folks lived off of, and remember many of the dishes myself as a young boy, visiting Grandma.

Historia
Handsome and charismatic, Albert Hicks had long been known in the dive bars and gin joints of the Five Points, the most dangerous neighborhood in maritime Manhattan. For years, he operated out of the public eye, rambling from crime to crime, working on the water in ships, sleeping in the nickel-a-night flops, drinking in barrooms where rat-baiting and bear-baiting were great entertainments. Rich Cohen tells the story of this notorious underworld figure, from his humble origins to the wild, globe-crossing, bacchanalian crime spree that forged his ruthlessness and his reputation.

Facinating

A somewhat obscure story that really comes to life and paints a great portrait of the times. The narration by Mr. Fliakos is excellent, the narrative leaves you waiting on the next twist and turn.

Historia
From one of our finest military historians comes a monumental work that shows us at once the truly global reach of World War II and its deeply personal consequences. Remarkably informed and wide-ranging, Inferno is both elegantly written and cogently argued. Above all, it is a new and essential understanding of one of the greatest and bloodiest events of the 20th century.

Compelling First Person Perspective on World War 2
Revisado: 05-14-13
A narrative of the war providing excellent analysis and perspective, and with dramatic insertions from letters written contemporaneously by those impacted. Very moving.
