The relationship of Ray and his grandmother was special and Rey was a good young man.

How important are our posessions?
Revisado: 08-09-24
This takes a fun look at material possessions and their value and importance in our lives from a few different points of view. It makes you think about experiences, memories, life experiences, family..... what is important and why or why not are material things and memories important.
But this is all told with a light hearted fun back story.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Beautiful story of love through the generations
Revisado: 08-09-24
We follow this family as they live with a generational "curse" of drowning. But it is explored in many ways and from many perspectives. Generations are doing the best they can to live with these memories. There is a lot of love expressed in so many ways in this family. We also learn about life in India and I grow to appreciate everyone.
This was a long listen, but I looked forward to my time listening to this book (as I drove or walked). Like always, after getting to know all the characters, I miss them when the story ends.

A beautiful story about a woman's strength & love
Revisado: 08-09-24
I enjoyed this book and all of the characters that were woven into the story. I was able to completely visualize the historic setting and circumstances and I felt great compassion, joy and concern for all of the characters.
The storyteller was a wonderful strong compassionate and upright woman. A mother, a wife, a midwife and a friend with strong ethics for social justice, It was a loving and strong story about the love of family through all of life's possible adversities.

Historia
In the opening pages of Jamie Ford's stunning debut, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

So much more than a Love Story.
Revisado: 08-09-24
This difficult story was gently told through the friendship of 2 young students, and how they navigated the effects and consequences of WWII as Chinese Americans and Japanese Americans. This coming of age story was surrounded by cultural & ethnic prejudice, the war with Japan, and family relationships & conflict. This setting in American history has not been given the importance & compassion that it should. Looking back, this was not a great moment in American history.
I did relish knowing how these young people grew, as they learned so much & so fast about life. This story follows the main character through his life, as he shares his story with his son. I felt very involved in these characters lives, their families lives, and appreciated their friends.
The author was not making a political statement, but writing about human relationship through adversity.

History, Medicine, Cultural traditions...
Revisado: 03-02-24
I'm fascinated by the history and the cultural traditions that this author shares with us. It is so far from any life I could imagine, & often hard to understand and accept, but good to know.
I felt like I knew and understood all the characters.... and appreciated them (and all of their complexities) , by the end of the book.
These were amazing, beautiful, strong living women.

Life is complicated.
Revisado: 03-01-24
The book was long, but I felt like I knew the characters personally. There were endless challenges in their lives, but also, an abundant about of love too. The goodness of the characters shone thru in their lives, with all the twists and turns of nature and nurture and politics. This story revoled around love, medicine, family, religion, politics, careers and their country. All influencing the other.

When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.
