A New Perspective
Revisado: 10-08-19
Nathan Makaryk tells a compelling story in an entirely new way. His format of a shifting storyteller keeps the reader on their toes, and his novel take on a beloved legend keeps you coming back for more... more intrigue, more betrayal, more heartbreak! Definitely looking forward to his next installment.

Very interesting but dragged in places
Revisado: 04-23-19
I understand wanting to let his wife share her experiences, both positive and negative, but there were parts that felt quite irrelevant (eg, melon ball story). If I hadn’t been so interested in hearing about the research, I probably would’ve lost interest and not come back. I think there could’ve been more editing and summarizing of personal anecdotes. Obviously very important content, though.

This narrator annoyingly OVER-articulates everything. It’s distracting, and that’s coming from a Speech Therapist. I feel like he’s shouting his consonants at me.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Off-putting
Revisado: 03-08-19
The story was compelling but the narrator’s style was disconcerting... his cadence and tone almost seemed amused or lighthearted, which was seriously off putting for me. He could’ve been reading interesting trivia or narrating a children’s book. It didn’t feel appropriate for the subject matter. I don’t know what he was going for— maybe he was trying to bring some levity to a dark story— but it didn’t work for me.

Inspiring
Revisado: 02-27-19
What a woman. Such fierce loyalty, such conviction. My only complaint was that her cadence was sometimes a little too slow and methodical... found myself zoning out a number of times because there was something about her performance that reminds me a bit of guided meditation. I bit more variety in tone/rate/prosody would’ve helped. Overall, definitely enjoyed.

Why
Revisado: 08-30-18
The element of a dystopian novel that draws me in is the backstory… Why is the world the way that it is and why should I care?
Perhaps more is revealed in future installments of this series, but this first book didn’t give me nearly enough motivation to find out. The exposition was scant yet labored, and the only thing that kept me invested was a premise I hadn’t read before— a world split by gender.
I found it hard to care about the heroine because of the narrator’s voicing— particularly the painful deep vox portions (why would she make the deepened female voice sound so artificially deep, and then use her regular voice for the actual man in the conversation?! UGH.)
I’ll admit that the love interest was well thought out, but that shouldn’t be the one redeeming quality of a dystopian story... if the world that the author creates is compelling enough, the reader doesn’t need a sweeping romance to keep them turning the pages.

Thrilling and Expertly Told
Revisado: 08-07-18
Branagh may be my favorite narrator of all time. You’d be hard-pressed to find a narrator who could blend French, British, American, and Russian voices more effortlessly. His flawless accents and shifting tone made what was already a compelling story even more so!

Audio Didn’t Do This Any Favors
Revisado: 07-17-18
The story was somewhat interesting— a different premise than other undead tales— but the antagonist’s voice was cloying and unbearable. Not really the narrator’s fault, though, because the character was written to be that way. Regardless, I couldn’t get past being taunted with hideous violence by what sounded like Chucky in a tutu.

Never picked up
Revisado: 07-07-18
The story started fairly strong but fizzled for me. I found myself frustrated with all of the characters, and I thought Fellowes would make them more sympathetic or pitiable in the 3rd Act but I just found myself bored and disinterested.
