Engaging

Lots of characters, lots of moving parts, including rolling heads, but engaging and fairly easy to follow thanks to clear writing and a talented narrator. I’m hoping she wrote one about Elizabeth I to follow this.

Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

Flawless performance, I didn’t even notice the narrator because he delivered the story so well.
I don’t know how many hours long this recording is but I could not stop listening. I didn’t know anything about this expedition and if you don’t either, you should do yourself a favor and not learn anything until you’ve finished this book.

Historia
What is the meantime? According to author and inspirational speaker Iyanla Vanzant, being in the "meantime" means being in a state of limbo. Rather than wallow in confusion, Vanzant encourages you to use the meantime to prepare yourself for true love. The first order of business is to clean house. Room by room, Vanzant takes you through a metaphorical cleaning of the soul. This way, when love finally comes knocking on the front door, you'll have a clean house to welcome it into.

Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Great story; so-so recording

As expected the story was unpredictable and engaging, but prepare to turn the volume up and down as the narrator alternates between urgent whispers and random shouting. Someone should remaster this recording or something.

Historia
Norman Mailer's Pulitzer Prize-winning and unforgettable classic about convicted killer Gary Gilmore now in audio. Arguably the greatest book from America's most heroically ambitious writer, The Executioner's Song follows the short, blighted life of Gary Gilmore who became famous after he robbed two men in 1976 and killed them in cold blood. After being tried and convicted, he immediately insisted on being executed for his crime. To do so, he fought a system that seemed intent on keeping him alive long after it had sentenced him to death.

Great book, weak performance
Revisado: 07-12-18
The reader doesn’t know how to pronounce many words, including famous names of people and places. Stress is put on words at random and not in keeping with the meaning of the sentence they are in. It’s almost like listening to a robot read, though he does a consistent job with voicing the various characters who are quoted.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

I was hoping to learn more about how block chain currencies work and thought this book might be a fun introduction to that. It’s a good story and a page turner til the end but I didn’t learn much about the mechanics of the dark web or about cryptocurrencies, which are explained only to the degree necessary to move the plot along.

Historia
When 11-year-old James Renner fell in love with Amy Mihaljevic, the missing girl seen on posters all over his neighborhood, it was the beginning of a lifelong obsession with true crime. That obsession led James to a successful career as an investigative journalist. It also gave him PTSD. In 2011 James began researching the strange disappearance of Maura Murray, a UMass student who went missing after wrecking her car in rural New Hampshire in 2004.

Wake up call
Revisado: 05-27-18
For me the true crime habit started with Serial and spiraled downward into lower quality true crime media, covering less and less compelling cases.
This is an honest and personal confession of morbid fascination with the case of a missing person whose family does not welcome the attention. The author is the star of the story and his flaws are on display. It’s a page turner and I listened to it straight through, but it helped me to realize I really need to stop. True crime addiction is not healthy or productive and James Renner demonstrates why.
