Marc Huestis is an award-winning filmmaker, camp impresario and social activist. In 1977, he was in Harvey Milk's camera store when he helped found the 1st Gay Film Festival, now Frameline, the oldest and largest LGBT Festival in the world. He made several award-winning shorts including Unity (1978) about the persecution of gays during Nazi Germany. In 1983, he released his first feature Whatever Happened to Susan Jane?, a new-wave musical comedy that documents San Francisco's vibrant underground. Diagnosed with HIV in 1985, he took his talents and made Chuck Solomon: Coming of Age one of the first documentaries on the AIDS crisis from a gay perspective, He is best known for his motion picture Sex Is… winner of the Teddy Award for Best Gay Film at the 1993 Berlin International Film Festival and his in-person tributes/benefit events feting celebrities from Hollywood's Golden Age such as Debbie Reynolds, Ann-Margret, Ann Miller, Jane Russell, Sandra Dee, Tony Curtis, Patty Duke, Rita Moreno and Kim Novak, to cult personalities such as John Waters, John Cameron Mitchell and Joey Arias at San Francisco's Castro Theatre. In 2010, Huestis was awarded the coveted Lifetime Achievement GOLDIE Award by the SF Bay Guardian, the oldest and largest alternative weekly in the Bay Area and he is a co-winner of the 2001 Frameline Award in Recognition as Co-Founding the Festival.
