James Hannam took a Physics degree at Oxford before training as an accountant. In 2008, he was awarded a PhD from Cambridge in the History and Philosophy of Science, with a thesis on the decline of medieval learning during the sixteenth century. In the meantime, he also worked on his book for the general reader, "God’s Philosophers: How the Medieval World Laid the Foundation of Modern Science" (Icon, 2009), which was shortlisted for the Royal Society Prize for Science Books in 2010. His latest book is The Globe: How the Earth Became Round (Reaktion, 2023) which tells the story of how we discovered the shape of the world, and how this knowledge spread to all cultures, overcoming traditional and sacred cosmologies. He is also the author of "What Everyone Needs to Know about Tax" (Wiley, 2017), an accessible guide to the policy and politics behind the UK tax system, based on his 20 years as a tax advisor. James has also written for various magazines and newspapers including the Spectator, History Today, Standpoint and New Scientist.
