Chris C. Penman has been a chartered structural engineer since 1999, spending 12 years working for multinational consultancies before starting his own consulting engineering and architectural practice in 2006. He has designed high-rise flatted developments, hospitals, schools and shopping centres; he’s worked on the design of the Scottish Parliament specifically the anti terror measures and bulletproof glass design and even had a building featured in FHM magazine (for looking like a giant phallus - Smáralind Shopping Centre in Iceland if you want to take a look). Chris currently has two Engineering Consultancies. One company specialising in structural glass, glass-reinforced plastic structures, curtain walling designs, including bullet- and blast-resistant structures. The other consultancy focuses solely on residential designs ranging from single-storey extensions to small housing developments. Chris has designed timber kit housing for all of the major bulk house builders, as well as designing or overseeing the design of more than a thousand house extensions, attic conversion and internal alteration projects on domestic properties. His residential designs practice turns around more than 180 domestic designs per annum. In addition to running two successful engineering practices, Chris also offers advice to homeowners and contractors on facebook via the “Ask the Structural Engineer” page. This facebook page was originally set up in 2017 to highlight some of the shocking home alterations people carry out and to poke fun at the poor workmanship of the avid DIY expert and cowboy builder. It has, however, turned into a source of information for the 40000+ people who like or follow the page.
