A'Lelia Bundles'a fifth book -- Joy Goddess of Harlem: A'Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance -- will be published by Scribner in June 2024. This revealing new biography will reframe the narrative of Walker's international travels, philanthropy, parties and friendships with some of the most famous musicians, writers, actors and artists of the 1920s. On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker (Lisa Drew Books/Scribner) was a NY Times 2001 Notable Book, a Hurston-Wright/Borders Books Legacy Award finalist and named the 2001 best book on black women's history by the Association of Black Women Historians. On Her Own Ground is a work of non-fiction with carefully researched and documented facts about Walker's life. "Self Made," the four-part Netflix series that premiered on March 20, 2020, was "inspired by" On Her Own Ground. The Hollywood version is entertaining but not historically accurate. Bundles's most recent book, All about Madam C. J. Walker, was published by Cardinal Publishing/Blue River Press in 2018 as a young adult biography. Madam C. J. Walker: Entrepreneur--also a young adult biography and the first book length treatment of Walker's life--received an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation in 1992. A revised edition was published by Chelsea House in 2008. Madam Walker Theatre Center: An Indianapolis Treasure--filled with 200 vintage photographs of Madam Walker and the two National Historic Landmarks associated with her legacy--was released in October 2013 by Arcadia Publishing. Her essay, "The Armor We Still Need," is included in Rochelle Riley's The Burden: African Americans and the Enduring Impact of Slavery (Wayne State University Press, February 2018). Bundles is a former network television executive and producer, who enjoyed a 30 year career with ABC News and NBC News. She is chairman emerita of the National Archives Foundation board, a vice chairman emerita of Columbia University's board of trustees, a member of several boards including Indiana Landmarks, the Indiana Historical Society's content committee, the Schlesinger Library at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, the March on Washington Film Festival and the Smithsonian's American Women's History Initiative.
