About this listen

Assaulted with opportunities for pleasure everywhere - from sex to food or exotic escapes - our culture is becoming more depressed and anxious. Research has shown that many people are having less sex, and that those who do have a lot enjoy it less. For more than thirty years, Nan Wise has worked as a therapist helping people gain a satisfying sex life. In recent years, her work has shifted to the study of anhedonia - the inability to experience pleasure from activities usually found enjoyable - and why more people than ever suffer from it.

In Why Good Sex Matters, Wise not only reveals the fundamental problem in how we think about sex and pleasure but also how we arrived at this problematic relationship to begin with. This fascinating book helps us reclaim our innate capacity for joy, fun, exuberance, curiosity, and humor, while showing how reaching our sexual potential makes us smarter, happier, and more productive people. Ultimately, it reveals how a new understanding of sex can lead to a more expansive experience of pleasure in all aspects of our lives.

Highly Recommend This Book

As both a client and a psychologist/therapist myself, I highly highly recommend this book (and Dr Nan Wise as a therapist, resource in your life). This book is full of scientific/neurological data, complimented by very relatable case examples and practical skills to use in your own life to find your way to (or back to) a place of inner connection and pleasure! Truly a wonderful book written by a beautiful, humble relatable woman! Well done Dr. Wise!!

New information wish there was more details

Overall glad I bought it. I learned somethings about the dopamine balance and pattern of use in the brain. I want more description of how exactly to fix a dysregulation, but the book gives a brief summary of that.

Her voice seems to be incredibly slow with a strong accent. If that bothers you, playing it at 1.2 speed still sounds good and fixes the issue. I admire the author for pursuing this research. Hope she writes more about the therapeutic techniques in the future

maybe the best sex book I've listened to

I've listened to a lot of audiobooks on sex and intimacy and love. Peggy Kleinplatz, Esther Perel, Dr John Gottman, Dr Sue Johnson, Justin Lehmiller, and more on topics of Tantra and much much more. All of these books and authors have a lot to offer and I learned a lot from them. But none of them left me feeling as though they'd developed a fully integrated approach to love and intimacy. They all left me feeling there was something more to be understood. Not this book. I purchased this book curious and finished feeling this woman's work is incredible. Looking forward to learning more about her approach.

Fluffy language but, good content

The book is about a topic which definitely needs to be talked about more.

at the same time the language used in the book is very "fluffy" I am almost expecting to be sold a healing crystal from the diction used.
however the book it's self is good

An Excellent Read/Listen for Everyone

I learned SO much in this book and it doesn't just pertain to sex. It delves into anhedonia: a psychological condition characterized by the inability to experience pleasure in normally pleasurable acts. I didn't know that word before Dr. Nan's book, but boy I refer to it often now as I'm so much more aware of how it has crept into my life in various ways.

This book was selected for my virtual book club for women with the discussion taking place in June 2020 - deep in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic where many of us have struggled emotionally. Getting a better understanding of why things that once brought us great pleasure can turn into something we've lost interest in is very valuable right now.

Dr. Nan REALLY knows her stuff and this book was incredibly enlightening! The fact that it was read by the author herself always makes me feel more connected.

I highly recommend this book!
