About this listen
Near the northeastern shores of Lake Michigan lies a wilderness dotted with small towns and farms doing their best to eke out a living with the short growing season the lands to the north provide. Where growing crops have limited success, dairy farms can flourish.
AJ Clark and Zook James have been best friends since kindergarten. Both characters gave off a different vibe right from the start. By the time they reached high school, they had established a wall of protection that would last a lifetime. AJ is gay and Zook takes the steps to transition to a male.
Right before AJ is about to finish his bachelor’s degree, his grandfather passes and he has to quit school to run the dairy farm, raise his little sister and care for his aging grandmother.Trying to make ends meet while running a small-scale dairy farm allows little time for enjoying the lifestyle young men usually do at his age. Being gay in a small farming community doesn’t make life any easier.
Just as AJ thought he was sinking fast, his best friend calls to let him know he can no longer tolerate living under his wealthy parent’s umbrella in the city of Detroit. He loves his parents, but hates the big city life. Even though the big city is best suited for a trans male, Zook wants to work on the farms like he did before his parents moved away. Zook finds employment on the Halko dairy farm only a stone’s throw away from where he moves in with AJ.
One mile north of the Clark farm lies the Halko farm. A very successful, large-scale diary farm run by a Finnish American family who never thinks twice about giving AJ a helping hand. The Halko family members prove time and time again to be AJ’s lifeline to a struggling existence. The eldest son, Jussi, was AJ’s childhood crush. He separates from the Air Force to pursue a career in law enforcement with the Manistee Police Department. Like the other members of his family, Jussi is always there when AJ is in need of help.
Michigan has more than its fair share of individuals with the agenda of ridding the world of anything related to the LGBTQ community. When threats are made against the two farms with their LGBTQ connection, all characters unite to keep each other safe. Everlasting relationships develop along the way.
