Fantastic snapshot of the US attitudes towards sex

This is not a one-handed read -- this is a collection of non-fiction culled from the media in the year under review -- 2011.

It's a fascinating glimpse into the dysfunctional early 21st Century attitudes towards sex in the US.

I live in a reasonably conservative country -- South Africa. Prostitution is illegal here and pornography was only legalised in 1994(!). And yet we have legalised gay marriage and have leading judges who are also anti-Aids activists.

We celebrate Women's month for the whole of August and sexual violence against women is increasingly being treated with the contempt and horror which it deserves.

Reading about how frightened and fascinated US society is by sex gave me an interesting insight into how my own culture deals with teenage sex, sex among older people, prostitution, rape and homosexuality. These are all covered in this collection.

I'm very glad Susie Bright decided not to read this one. I find her delivery off-putting sometimes. The narrators did justice to the material. There were some phrasing issues that, if I were directing the performances, I would have done differently. But on the whole, very good indeed -- nothing deal-breaking.

I cannot wait for next year's edition!
