Kate del Castillo to Star in Audible Theater Production “the way she spoke”

Audible Inc. is pleased to announce the New York premiere of 2018 Dramatists Guild Lanford Wilson Award winner Isaac Gomez’s the way she spoke, directed by Jo Bonney, and starring Kate del Castillo, as the next Audible Theater production at the Minetta Lane Theatre.

Previews will begin Monday, July 8 ahead of a Thursday, July 18 opening night at the Minetta Lane Theatre, Audible’s creative home for live performances in New York.

An actress enters a theater, picks up a script, and begins to read. The story that unfolds details disturbing and haunting accounts of the murder of thousands of women in Juarez, Mexico and one playwright’s journey of discovery and responsibility. As lines blur between theatricality and reality, intense and provocative questions are raised and demand deeper examination. Based on a series of intimate interviews, this one-woman play demonstrates the power of speaking truth, even as it considers the implications of doing so.

The creative team includes Riccardo Hernandez (scenic design), Emilio Sosa (costume design), Lap Chi Chu (lighting design), Elisheba Ittoop (sound design), and Aaron Rhyne (projection design).

BIOGRAPHIES

KATE DEL CASTILLO (The Actress). A powerful artistic force since her teens, Mexican actress-producer Kate del Castillo has carefully nurtured a multi-national presence following over a decade as one of the most sought-after talents on Mexican television and film. The daughter of legendary Mexican actor Eric del Castillo, Kate appeared in her first film at age 9. Television credits include the title role in Telemundo’s blockbuster Super Series “La Reina del Sur,” “Jane the Virgin” (CW), “Ingobernable” (Netflix, also co-produced), “Weeds” (Showtime) and “American Family” (PBS). Feature film credits include The Day I Met El Chapo (Netflix, also co-produced) Under the Same Moon, American Visa (Best Actress Award at Málaga Film Festival), Julia with Tilda Swinton, Trade co-starring Kevin Kline, No Good Deed with Idris Elba, The 33, All About Nina, and the upcoming Bad Boys For Life among others. A philanthropist and an outspoken global activist, del Castillo was appointed Ambassador for the Mexican Commission on Human Rights to combat human trafficking in 2009 in Mexico City. She remains a devoted spokesperson for PETA and founded the “Los Angeles en Mexico” Charity for Mexico after the devastating earthquake.

ISAAC GOMEZ (Playwright) is an award-winning Chicago-based playwright originally from El Paso, Texas/Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. His play La Ruta received its world premiere at Steppenwolf Theater Company this past winter. He is currently under commission from South Coast Repertory, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and Steep Theatre. His plays have been supported by Steppenwolf, Primary Stages, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Goodman Theatre, Albany Park Theater Project, WaterTower Theater, Haven Theater, Greenhouse Theater Center, Pivot Arts, and many others. He is the recipient of the 2018 Dramatists Guild Lanford Wilson Award, the 2017 Jeffry Melnick New Playwright Award at Primary Stages, an inaugural 3Arts “Make A Wave” grantee, a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists, an Artistic Associate with Victory Gardens Theater, Ensemble Member with Teatro Vista, Artistic Associate with Pivot Arts, and an advisory committee member of the Latinx Theatre Commons (LTC). He is a Professional Lecturer at The Theatre School at DePaul University, and is represented by The Gersh Agency and Circle of Confusion.
