Hispanic Heritage Month: Celebrating Individuals and Their Journeys
Hispanic Heritage Month was established in 1968 by former President Lyndon Johnson to commemorate the important contributions of Latinx Americans in the United States. It is observed from September 15 to October 15. Here at Audible, we had our own celebration – which to us is all about elevating people’s voices.
Audible is a place that believes in belonging. As a Hispanic female in a leadership position, breaking the glass ceiling is what I want to continue to do because if we as a company – if we as a Hispanic people more pointedly – want to change the world, it starts with one bold individual at a time.
Sharing individuals’ stories, like Crespo's, was the focus of a conversation Audible hosted this month with Newest Americans co-founders Julie Winokur and Tim Raphael. Newest Americans’ multimedia collaborative of journalists, media-makers, artists, faculty and students tells stories rooted in Newark, NJ, a city shaped by migration, that provide a glimpse into the world of the newest Americans and a vision of our demographic future. The organization is also helping to break down barriers through collaborative storytelling with Audible employees. They were joined by Marisol Conde Hernandez, New Jersey’s first undocumented female attorney and the co-founder of the NJ DREAM Act Coalition, whose incredible journey was captured in a Newest Americans web series.
And as part of our efforts to activate caring in our community, employees volunteered at a workshop for Newark elementary school students about ‘Dia de los Muertos’ — a Latinx celebration for loved ones who have passed away.
Finally, our editorial team shared important stories from Latinx authors in a Nuestras Voices collection, which includes beloved classics and new narratives that transcend borders. Employees also shared their favorite audiobooks by many of these Latinx authors here.
